JET_Affinity
Please see the attached screenshot, which shows the poor quality of Affinity's Expand Stroke command. JET
Staff MEB Posted July 11, 2016 Staff Share Posted July 11, 2016 Hi JET_Affinity, We are already aware of this. It should be improved in a future version/update. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
JimmyJack
In the meantime.... hit smooth. Sometimes it helps out quite a bit. I know, I know.... an extra step (and it's still not.... super). What can I say. It's a work in progress.
Staff MattP Posted July 11, 2016 Staff Share Posted July 11, 2016 Yes, sorry... I will definitely get this resolved as soon as I'm able to.
JET_Affinity
Thanks. Glad it's on the radar to be improved. It's one of those "dead giveaways" of a sub-par program which experienced users look for. Outline path commands should never yield paths like that; useless for further editing. Other places to look for the same thing are after expanding the results of vector Brushes and even (believe it or not) converting text to paths in some programs. Smoothing commands unpredictably degrade shapes. They're a very compromised necessary evil for things like imported DXFs, otherwise to be avoided whenever possible. I like clean, tidy, economically-drawn paths. One of the reasons I very seldom use a stylus or the Brush or Pencil tools designed for them. I take the time to draw paths accurately and apply Brush effects thereafter. I really have no use for "painterly" features in a vector drawing program. I see them as appropriate for raster programs, but contrary to the whole intent, purpose, and advantage of vector-based graphics. And I have no use whatsoever for yet another autotracing implementation (or other features based on them under-the-hood) unless and until they start acquiring actual shape-recognition intelligence. m-b
'expand stroke' is the biggest problem for me in AD. I just do simple calligraphic drawings. To give this strokes a natural look I need to convert the lines and adjust the vectors individually. But with 'expand a stroke' I get always a "ooooh noooo - chaos!!!" vector point Invasion! For me impossible to further process, because it will cost too much time. I hope there will soon be a feature to reduce the points to minimum, which I find very important for a vector program. Thanks! Quote lll3◑
Staff MEB Posted August 4, 2016 Staff Share Posted August 4, 2016 Hi m-b, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) You can try to change to the Node Tool and and click the Smooth Curve icon (from the Action section) in the context toolbar. It may help a little but i'm afraid is not enough for what you need. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software

But it should not be a final solution. ; ) Quote lll3◑
