Strange ALT bug

Recommended Posts

I'm getting a strange bug. When I use the ALT key and drag an object to duplicate it, it works fine using the LEFT ALT key with the Move tool. When I use the RIGHT ALT key it does not work, but just moves the object.

In addition right after attempting to duplicate, using the RIGHT ALT key, some (maybe more) of the short cut keys no longer work (or at least the ones I tried: Undo, Redo, Cut, Paste, Duplicate). However these commands still work from the menu system.

Affinity Designer 1.5.0.5

I don't know if this occurred in previous versions.

Thanks Chris. Just tried it with CTRL and it works great. The reason I was using ALT was I saw it in a video awhile back, don't remember which one.

Thanks again for your help, maybe ALT should be removed so it can be used for something else.

There is some other action / sequence of events, that is causing the shortcut keys to stop working. It's happened several times now but I don't know what's causing it. Maybe you can take a look.

Sorry I was not clear enough. The issue I'm having is that the shortcut keys stop working. This has happened several times, but I don't know why.

Before when this happened, it was the Right Alt key and Drag action. Now something else is also causing them to stop working. I'm not doing anything with text at all, so that is not the problem.

I'll be working for a while, use a shortcut key and none of them work, until I restart AD.

Hi Chris, thanks for responding. That is what caused the problem originally. I'm no longer using those key combo and something else is also causing the shortcut keys to stop working. I just don't know what.

I tried to reproduce it and will keep at it when it occurs again. I do have a bunch of custom shortcuts, but when it happens all the shortcuts I tried, custom or standard fail.

Chris, here are the shortcut keys I use. Is that enough information or would you like something else?

I've just added those to my own  shortcut profile however after 30 mins of editing a personal file, everything is OK.

If you go to the Preferences >Keyboard Shortcuts, on the right it says Load and Save. If you click Save and save it locally, you can send me the file which I can then load into my PC.

Here they are.

I could be wrong but I don't think it's my shortcut keys, I certainly didn't do anything exotic. Other people also had the shortcut keys turned off when they did the Right Alt drag and they did not have my shortcut key file. There is just some other process(es) that turn them off.

Anyway good luck, let me know how it goes.

I think it will get removed. It's ALT on the Mac so I assume that's where it has come from. Thanks for reporting this.

May I point you to a short conversation I had a couple of days ago with MEB:

Perhaps the ALT+drag is on purpous in AD?

Just a thought.

Chris and Mark,

I found another instance that will disable the shortcut keys (all, not just my customized ones). Create 2 shapes, one overlapping the other, and select them both. If you do a boolean subtract or add, holding the Right Alt key (to create a compound object) it blows away the shortcut keys. The Left Alt key works fine. So there is that Right Alt key combination again, this time on a toolbar command, not an object (clue???).

However, I'm sure this was not what caused my other reported incident.
