From build 2.6.0.2861 the Colour Panel's colour picker will to exhibit older (exiting 2.5.5 release) behaviour by using Option modifier when you Mouse Up.

This already worked on Windows before this build, but now it also works for Mac and iPad.

Auto apply color seems to be inconsistent with other tool settings. For example, when I draw a rectangle using the rectangle tool, I can immediately press the Alt key to pick a color and it applies automatically. However, with the color picker, pressing the Alt key does 'not' apply the color automatically, maybe press Alt key to apply color automatically is better?

Can you clarify what you mean by "press the Alt key to pick a color"? That sounds like the behavior I would expect if you were using the Brush Tool, where pressing Alt would switch to the Color Picker Tool temporarily, but I didn't think that would do anything using the Rectangle Tool, so I suspect I'm misinterpreting what you're doing.

My reading, rightly or wrongly was that this relates to the new auto-apply colour feature, i.e., with a shape selected, Alt Drag will apply a selected colour to the shape on mouse up...

The way the colour picker now works in the Colour panel, while extremely welcome is the reverse, i.e., holding Alt and selecting a colour stores the colour in the colour well, i.e., 2.5.5 and earlier behaviour whereas selecting a colour using the colour picker without Alt held down automatically applies the colour to the shape so Alt works in reverse for the two different methods...

When the Rectangle tool is active, you can hold down the Alt key to pick and apply colors automatically from the document. I've attached a video to demonstrate.

By the way, I changed the shortcut for the Rectangle tool from "M" to "R", the shortcut keys I pressed are displayed in the lower left corner of the screen.

I never knew that shortcut was a thing, on Mac we don't get that nice circular overlay showing us we're picking a color, it just shows the crosshairs. Not gonna lie, kind of jealous of windows for a split second there, lol!

You should see that nice circular overlay, it's on both Mac and Windows, make sure you still have the Shape tool selected when Alt Dragging...

If you just click it shows the crosshairs. To get the "circular overlay" you have to click and drag

Hello Affinity Team,

First, I want to express my appreciation for the amazing tools you’ve provided with the Affinity suite. As a Universal License user, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the seamless experience across Photo, Designer, and Publisher.

However, I’ve noticed a usability issue with the Color Picker Tool that I believe could enhance the workflow for many users. Specifically, the color box in the Color Picker is too small, making it challenging to select precise shades or navigate comfortably, especially on higher-resolution monitors.

Suggested Improvements:

  1. Provide an option to resize the color box so users can adjust it based on their needs.
  2. Increase the default size of the color box to improve usability.
  3. Consider including a pop-out option for the color picker, allowing it to be expanded into a larger window when needed.

A larger or resizable color picker would greatly enhance precision and workflow efficiency for users who frequently work with color-sensitive designs.

Thank you for considering this feedback. I’m confident this small adjustment could make a big difference for your user base.

Best regards,
