Switch to Affinity from DrawPlus?

Recommended Posts

According to Serif Affinity Designer is the replacement for DrawPlus which has been discontinued.

I have been a long time user of DrawPlus, since DPx4, (and the whole Serif "Plus" family of products) and have hundreds of files in .dpp and .dpa format.

Can Affinity open those files? Not that I see.

It certainly would be great if Affinity was backwards compatible with DrawPlus files since it is the "replacement" for DrawPlus.

I use DrawPlus to create and export drawings into SWF files for importing into animation software.

Does Affinity export in SWF format? Not that I see.

DrawPlus is/was a great/cheaper alternative to Adobe Flash for creating SWF files.

Granted, SWF is an older format but is still widely used.

I also use the DrawPlus keyframe animation feature to create animated SWF files.

Does Affinity have a keyframe feature? Not that I see.

I'm sure that Affinity is a great drawing package, especially since it is a big hit on MAC's, but currently is useless to me.

My only hope is that the next version of my animation software, coming out the end of this year, offers other import formats than SWF.

That or Affinity adds backwards compatibility with DrawPlus files, SWF output, and keyframing.

In the mean time I will continue to use DPx8 for my drawing needs.

That statement rather astonishes me as a long time DP user as is the originator of this thread. DP is discontinued, a Serif  product, vector drawing; Affinity seems to reflect those or am I also misunderstanding things? Perhaps the statement needs a little more amplification for past customers?

Understandably it is entirely new code but surely its functions are fundamentally similar?

There is nothing one can export from DP that can be imported by Affinity to continue editing so far as I can find. Whilst backward compatibility would be impractical possibly a final addition to DP for such an export would be helpful unless Affinity will open CAD/CAM exports.

Will Affinity eventually have an AI export, which remains an industry standard for use in 3D software for textures and spline creation?

I think what Mark means is that Affinity Designer doesn't replace DrawPlus in the same way that CraftArtist replaced Digital Scrapbook Artist. Although the project files have a different filename extension, CA was developed from the DSA codebase and it can open *.sbp files. AD was written from scratch, and the core functionality is written in a different programming language. AD cannot open DP project files, and there are currently no animation features.

You can publish as PDF or export to SVG to get your DP drawings or objects into a form that AD is able to import.

Serif DrawPlus and Affinity Designer are different programs and do not share the same features. Affinity Designer is an illustration program that has been written new, from scratch, and does not share any code with DrawPlus. We have designed Affinity Designer from the ground up to and consequently it already has many features that we were never able to put into DrawPlus. Equally there are some features of DrawPlus have not been added to Affinity Designer yet. Some features like animation that do not fit in the concept of what Affinity Designer is will most likely not be added.

We would suggest before you purchase that you look at the existing features of Affinity Designer and the vast array of video tutorials (and the roadmap of features that are coming) and decide if the software is right for you.
