Just downloaded the app. I'm attempting to use the color grading from another photo. I've gotten the colors from the photo in swatches, then when I go to adjustments -> gradient map -> click the red circle -> below that click the red color to bring up the color picker THAT's where the color picker won't let me select any color. It's only recognizing the gray of the background of the windows. I can't use the color picker to navigate to my swatches saved in the swatch panel and it won't recognize any of the colors in the rainbow box directly under color picker. It WILL let me type in the numbers beside of the sliders to try to get the color, which is my life raft right now. HELP! Also, I did allow permission to screen record in my settings on macbook pro (what i'm currently using to edit)

Mac os monterey 12.7

Welcome to the Affinity forums, @PhenaciteRose.

When you have clicked the red color well, you should be directly able to access Swatches on the panel that comes up. It sounds like you're trying to use the color sampler to sample from somewhere on the screen, which is a more complex process. That should also work, and I vaguely remember a bug in that area, but directly switching to Swatches and clicking on them would be more efficient for you.

Here's a recording from Windows, but macOS works the same way if I remember correctly:

Welcome to the forums @PhenaciteRose,

There is a known bug with the colour picker failing to sample outside of the canvas/app window and instead just sampling 255/255/255 on MacOS when using a HDMI display connection, so you may be running into this issue if you're sampling from the App's UI Swatches menu. You can however just select the colour directly from a swatch as demonstrated in Walt's recording.

Thank you! That's how I've been getting around the bug thus far. It's a bit of a process as I'm swatching colors from another image to mirror the color grading, so I'm having to eyeball it to match up colors on the gradient map color slider (large rainbow) to the saved swatches. Will they be fixing this issue in the near future?

Hopefully, but it's not something we're able to provide a timeframe for. 🙂 Using a USBC-USBC connection for your display eliminates the issue entirely, but it depends on if your display can accomodate this connector.

I'm currently editing on my Macbook Pro. Would you mind explaining the USBC connection fix in a bit more detail (explain to me like i'm 5 years old...) I also have the version for iPad as well. Would this be a better option? Excuse my ignorance as I'm navigating this program for the first time.

When using the colour picker tool to sample anywhere outside of the canvas, for example on the app’s user interface or in a separate browser window the colour picker will fail to sample correctly and just report the sampled colour incorrectly as 255/255/255. This issue is currently logged internally with the developers to be resolved in a future update.

We isolated the problem to displays using a DisplayPort or HDMI-type cable connection for the display input, so if you have an external monitor connected to your Macbook using either of these connection types, this will trigger the issue if you sample outside of the canvas area. However, we found that using a USB-C (source) to USB-C (display) cable as the display input prevents the issue.

For example, I use a Macbook Pro with an external display connected to it using a USB-C to USB-C cable and the colour picker functions as expected, but if I switch to use a USB-C (source) to HDMI (display) cable connection and try and use the colour picker outside of the canvas it will fail.

Does this mean that people like me with a MacStudio connected to a displayPort monitor can't use the colour picker properly anymore? Because my colour picker doesn't work anymore.

The colour picker will function within the canvas bounds, but it will fail to sample correctly outside of this area with a DisplayPort connection until the bug is fixed.
