Selection, what is the logic?

Recommended Posts

🇬🇧 Hi, I don't understand the logic of Affinity Designer 2.5.5 regarding the display of layers and groups in the appropriate panel when selecting objects in the artboard that are identical in their construction!… Is there a logic, is it a bug or am I completely stupid?…

This says "Curve" not "Group".

Please upload the file, if you can.

You have 2 different types of layers (Group and Layer)

They will act differently depending on your Auto-Select settings

Hi @carl123, thanks again for your very informative feedback: I had never noticed this subtlety (?!).

On the other hand, as much as the command for Layer Groups is obvious (Command + G) and I have always used it as it seems self-evident, as much as I have not found the command to “group” Layers in another Layer (unless this configuration is the legacy of a graphic file created with another vector application)!…

So, we have Layer Groups AND Layers containing Layers!…

Then, we have a first option, on the left in the contextual toolbar:
Automatic selection”, YES or NO.

And again, we have in the same place three sub-options:
Default, Objects or Groups.

And finally, we have an option “Modify all Layers” located at the bottom of the Panel of the same name.

I bow: I am definitely not intelligent enough to understand all these subtleties (because yes, there is certainly a reason for all this... Well, I hope so), even after carefully reading the online Help.

NB: unchecking the “Automatic selection” option and choosing the “Objects” option no longer allows the selection of any object on the Artboard, whether it is in a Group or in a Layer containing other Layers!…

That will probably depend on (a) whether you have Edit All Layers enabled (bottom of Layers panel) and (b) whether you have an Artboard selected/active in the Layers panel when you're trying to select them and (c) whether they're on that selected/active Artboard or not.
