Linked layers / Merge Down inconsistency

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I try to find a way to get a live pixelation effect for 2 reasons:

  • The available destructive pixelation filter is broken for even integers (creates blurriness)
  • There is no live pixelation filter

What is possible is to use a linked pixel layer and have the copy scaled by integre factors e.g. 8. This will show a nice pixelated result.

The issue is that it will not automatically update to anything except its own pixel content. Child layers get ignored.

So next trial is to use merge down, to have a single-click update solution.

Issue:

  • If you use merge down with vector layers, the link stays intact
  • If you use merge down with pixel content, the link state gets lost. Only the copy shows link state.

In my view it is a bug that the target layer of a merge down losses its layer link state if the upper layer is a pixel layer.

Side note:

when you try to re-establish the link between layers Affinity often (freezes and never comes back to live until you force-close the app), on all platforms (Mac, Win, iPad).

I get this behaviour on all my devices, for newly created documents. After some minutes of editing with linked pixel layers and further edits 8including merge down to on of the linked layer) Affinity becomes unusable. Every single time, on every device.

Below one occurrence where the link status vanishes. Shown in Dartboard 2, but clicking the arrows jumps to a layer where link vanished.

The embedded file is configured for continuous export (background.PNG).
