Windows Beta - Any ways to zoom other than Zoom[Z]?

Wondering if there is a way to engage the zoom functionality without explicitly activating the Zoom[Z] tool.

 

I'm looking for functionality mirroring Illustrator (Ctrl+Space+MouseLeft[or, MouseRight]) or Inkscape (middle mouse wheel).

 

Windows Beta looks great!

CTRL + mouse wheel does that for me in the Windows beta.

 

Space + left mouse button to pan (like in the Adobe world).

Also Shift + mousewheel to pan. 

 

Edit menu, Preferences, Keyboard Shortcuts, View menu, Zoom in/out and assign whatever you want, e.g. Ctrl + Plus and Ctrl + Minus on the Numeric keypad.

Hmm. For some reason, Ctrl+Mousewheel doesn't work for me. Have tried a couple different mouses. No dice. 

 

I did get Space+Ctrl+Left Mouse Button to zoom in (and adding the alt key zooms out). But I had to depress the space key first--otherwise, the key combo would not work.

CTRL+mouse scroll works for me but would love to have the option to switch CTRL with ALT and have ALT+scroll = zoom (like I have in Illustrator)

I had forgotten I had to enable that. I wonder why it's not the default setting?

Because by default the mouse wheel scrolls in Windows, so we preserve the same behaviour.

I thought the problem was that Ctrl + Mousewheel didn't work unless one enabled "Use mousewheel for scrolling," but I see now that I have not enabled it, but it still works. 

 

Since this is a Serif program, I think the default should stay as it is, to use Ctrl + Scroll-wheel for zooming., otherwise, how does one scroll up and down?

I think that it should be a default setting also - many programs are not shipping their products with the scroll wheel as the zoom and it drives me nuts changing it in the preferences. Its kind of WHY we have a scroll wheel in the first place.

 

Yes, as you've just said, it's a scroll wheel. The default behaviour in Windows is to scroll (look at Explorer, or Internet Explorer, Chrome etc), holding down CTRL will zoom.

Hmm. I've enabled "Use mousewheel for scrolling." The odd thing is that, for me, the mousewheel neither scrolls nor zooms. Not at all. I've tried multiple mouses. It's making AD a bit difficult to use, to say the least.

Just to throw another option into the mix, you can also hold down the mouse wheel button and scroll to zoom, or just hold it down to pan

Definitely this - This is my preferred method of zooming and panning!

Any ideas? I really want to explore this software, but this is a serious blocker.

 

(I didn't realize how much I use zoom functionality until it's very hard to get to. Had to go back to Illustrator to get some work done.)

Hi megalofauna, this is the first report we've received about a mouse wheel not working so it's pretty hard for us to track down the problem! Have you tried it in other apps, Chrome etc? Is it just Designer that has a problem?

My mousewheel appears to work exactly as expected in all other programs. It's just Designer where I've noticed an issue.

Do you have any other mouse control software installed (and running)? We install a hook to capture the mouse wheel even when you don't have focus on the document view, however if you have other apps installed which also install a hook, but don't play nicely, they can break our software.

I did—this guy. 

 

 

Stopping the process restores normal mouse wheel functionality to Designer. 

 

I sure do like that little utility, but it's nice to know what the issue is.

Excellent. I'm glad we've got to the bottom of the issue. It might be worth contacting the developers of WizMouse and letting them know that they aren't playing nicely...

I may be the only person in the world who cares about this. Ha. 

 

I found another light utility that allows for scrolling inactive windows. 

 

It breaks regular (non-Ctrl) scroll in Designer, but ctrl+mouse wheel still zooms. 

 

I can live with that on both fronts.

Are you sure you need that utility? One of the things I really liked about Windows 10 is that it supported the ability to scroll the non active window right out of the box.

Your welcome! I used to use a similar utility for many years, with occasional conflicts with some software. I accidentally discovered it worked natively in windows 10 when an app that never wheel scrolled before, started working in win 10. And not only does it work within an application, but for any showing window in any application whether it is active or not, very cool!
