Mareike

Welcome to the Affinity forums, @MareikeE.

What OS do you use?

Thanks, Mareike.

In that case, I will make a guess: I think you had probably originally installed using the EXE/MSI form of the installer, rather than the MSIX form.

If you had installed using MSIX, then when the update became available, you would have had gotten a prompt, and it would include a button to Install. Pressing that would automatically download the updated installer, run it, stop the application, and restart the updated application.

However, if you had installed using EXE/MSI, then when the update became available you would have gotten a prompt with a Download button. Pressing Download would take you to the Affinity website, where you have to choose which version of the installer to download. Once you have downloaded, you would close the application manually, run the installer manually, and reopen the application. Frequently, users make the wrong choice, and download the MSIX rather than downloading the EXE/MSI.

And if you did that, I think you can lose the customizations you've mentioned because the two versions of the installer use different data directories for storing user preferences and other data. But they're not really lost, you would just need to run the right version of the installer.

If that's what you did then you should have two entries in the Windows Start Menu for the application. One will be for the older EXE/MSI version (2.5.3), and one for the newer 2.5.5 version. And in that case you can close the newer application, right-click on its entry in the Start Menu, and choose Uninstall (or perhaps More Options > Uninstall). Then click on the older one, which should once again ask you to Download. Pick the right version this time, and you should have your old settings back again once you're installed it.

Hi Walt,

Thank you so much. Very likely that is what happend. I did not understand these choices and asked my brother on the first run what to choose. I am pretty sure it was not EXE but one of the other two options. Then, with installing the update, I chose one without asking again. I took what I thought it was - and probably I was wrong.

The last days I proceeded working before I realised that my customizations are lost. And now I fear to loose all that work. Will that happen when I go back to the older version?

  1. Do you have two copies of the application showing up in the Windows Start Menu?
  2. If you do, please start the first one, and when it has started, provide a screenshot of the upper-right section of the Account dialog. This will have release info, and if the release is 2.5.5 it will have other diagnostic info. Then close that copy, start the other one, and provide the same screenshot info for that one, please.

This will allow us to tell which one is which.

  3. If you don't have two, then I may not completely understand what has happened, but please provide the same screenshot for the one you have. Again, just the upper-right corner is fine, so you don't expose your email address.

We should b able to get you back to your original customizations once we know what you have installed now. But you would lose customizations you've made while using 2.5.5, probably.
