2.5.5 Update doesn't update previous

Recommended Posts

Hi @Clayton4740,

If you go to the Help Menu and select My Account which version is shown? Note: You may need to click the chevron to the left of My add-ons if the My Licence section isn't shown...

If you are running 2.5.5 but it's not launching from the Desktop icon you may need to recreate the Desktop shortcut...

Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5
Affinity Designer Beta 2.6.0.2861 | Affinity Photo Beta 2.6.0.2861 | Affinity Publisher Beta 2.6.0.2861

MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse
HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse

Did you Update v2.5.3 or download and install v2.5.5 separately?

You can just delete the Desktop Icon for v2.5.3 and create a new one for v2.5.5...

When loading desktop icon, course new update window pops. Have clicked update a few times. Still old desktop icon and link to 2.5.3 version still loads.

Seems 2.5.5 created a new folder on my C drive without update desktop icon.

Just seems like an update glitch.

I'm surprised it's letting you run the two side by side if both are retail versions...

Yes very odd.

Side note, I don't install programs on my main boot SSD drive, have a couple others I put them in, so original install was on my D drive, but the update doesn't seem to want to update it, and it created a new version on my boot drive even though the Update was done while running the previous version. Now I have 2 versions and guess I'm stuck with Affinity on my boot drive.

Ah, that explains it then...

You can manually create a new Desktop Icon for v2.5.5 and if you decide you want to keep both versions just rename both the shortcuts accordingly...

It sounds like you may have used a mix of EXE/MSI installer and also MSIX installer.

The EXE/MSI installer (if you've used it) will let you specify where to put the installed files. And it will create a desktop icon if you want. The MSIX does not do either of those.

Additionally, when an update is available, the EXE/MSI gives you an option to ignore it, or Download. The MSIX gives you an option to ignore it, or Install.

For the MSIX, the Install is automatic: the app downloads the proper installer, passes it off to Windows to install it, terminates, and then restarts when it's been updated.

For the EXE/MSI, the Download takes you to the Affinity website in your default browser, where you must select the proper version (make sure you choose EXE/MSI), download it, and install it. It's easy to choose the wrong version during this process. Then you'll have both installed. (That can be useful, but is more often a way to become confused and have problems, so it's generally not recommended.)
