Just a thought...the background is sharper than the people in the foreground. Normally, it would be the opposite to focus attention on the people. Our eyes tend to gravitate toward, sharper, brighter more colorful parts of an image. You might try blurring the background and sharpening the foreground. Another trick that sometimes helps is to desaturate the background some, again highlighting the people in the foreground.
