What is going on with Hyphenation?

Recommended Posts

I am using Affinity for a while now and it was just today, that I realized that there is no auto-hyphenation in Designer and Photo.

It took me an hour to find the right checkbox: In Affinity Publisher there are Hyphenation settings in the Paragraph panel.
By default auto-hyphenation is turned off (which also wonders me), but in Designer and Photo the settings are missing completely. Why would you not have this option in Designer
I understand that Designer is focused on graphics while Publisher is more text related, but it's obvious that you need auto hyphen at some point when there is a Frame Text tool.

I mean it works in Designer, I can copy the text frame to Publisher, add auto-hypen and copy it back to Designer. I
even can pick the hyphenated style, why would you spare this one litte auto-hyphenation checkbox? Or am I missing something?

Welcome to the Affinity forums.

No, you're not missing anything. Automatic Hyphenation was a function they added with Publisher, and enabling it remains exclusive to the Publisher application, which is the suggested application to use when functions like that are needed.

Yes, Designer can perform automatic hyphenation, but that is generally intended for cases where you're using the Designer Persona in Publisher, or when you're working on a Publisher document in the Designer application for some reason.

If you want automatic hyphenation in Designer, open the Text Styles panel and choose Import Text Styles from the panel options menu. Select a Publisher document that has a text style with hyphenation enabled and import its styles. You won't be able to turn hyphenation on and off in Designer but you can apply different styles to turn it on and off.
