deannab Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 this has happened since the first time i downloaded photo years ago. it won't open, now even after uninstall/reinstall. usually it would work until i shut the computer down, then have to reinstall. now it won't even start after reinstall. was told in the past to not let it connect to the VPN, which worked until MSIX which hides the application EXE. tried the beta installation, and still no luck. i have images to process for a new web site and this is really setting me back. how does this get fixed? thanks
walt.farrell Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 If the MSIX version doesn't work well with your other applications, then I suggest you uninstall the MSIX, download the EXE/MSI installer, and install that instead. Note that if you do this, you will need to be careful whenever the apps prompt you to Download an updated version, and make sure you continue to Download the EXE/MSI version instead of the MSIX version. -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop 1: Windows 11 Pro 24H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. Staff Lee D Posted September 9, 2024 Staff Posted September 9, 2024 @deannab On top of @walt.farrell suggestions. Have you tried opening the app using the CTRL key? Hold down the CTRL key and open the app, when the options appear release the key. Leave the default options checked but also check Disable Hardware Acceleration (V2 only) and then click Clear. If you're still using V1, follow the steps in this FAQ article to disable Hardware Acceleration. It's also worth checking to see if Windows is up to date and if any updates are available for your graphics drivers. It may also be worth checking the Windows Event Viewer and exporting the logs to be checked.
deannab Posted October 18, 2024 Author Posted October 18, 2024 @walt.farrell i did do both of those things @Lee D tried that just now and it worked until i restarted my computer. now those methods don't work at all. forgot to turn off hardware acceleration but can't do that until i can get it to start again.

Cmd wouldn't do anything for that. this is the CMD method i was talking about. and as usual, had to use it again or the app won't open no matter how many times i disable hardware acceleration EXE/MSI To use the flag, press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog and then type CMD and press Enter. This will launch Command Prompt. *Presuming you have the app installed in the default location, type in cd "C:\Program Files\Affinity\Photo 2\" and press Enter. Now type Photo --no-ocl and press Enter - the app will now launch. *If you installed the app to a different location or you're using Affinity Publisher or Designer, please update the location to point to correct folder. walt.farrell 1
