N Hodghton Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 Is there a simple way of adding page numbers to a 28 page document? Do I have to set up a master page first? And can I set a master page after I've started working on the document? Quote Using Publisher
GarryP Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 Master pages are probably your best bet for this. You can set-up a master page at any time and you can apply and re-apply master pages at any time. Create a master page, add your pages numbers (via the relevant Field) to it, then select all ‘normal’ pages and apply the master page. Quote
GarryP Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 I’ve attached a short video showing the steps to: create a master page (double-click the thumbnail to edit the master page after it’s been created); add the page number field to it (via menu “Text → Insert → Fields → Page Number); select all ‘normal’ pages (click on first page, scroll down and Shift-click last page); apply the master page to all pages (right-click on any selected page and choose “Apply Master” from the contextual menu). 2024-08-24 09-52-20.mp4 Ramon56 1 Quote
N Hodghton Posted August 24, 2024 Author Posted August 24, 2024 Many thanks Garry. After several attempts I've got all 28 pages numbered. (when all else fails, read the instructrions, carefully!) Quote Using Publisher
GarryP Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 You’re welcome. There’s an unofficial Publisher manual (written by a forum member) available here: Ramon56 1 Quote
N Hodghton Posted August 24, 2024 Author Posted August 24, 2024 Thanks again Garry. Actually I did find this manual a few weeks ago and sorted some of my problems with it. Unfortunately I found some of it very confusing. Of course that could be me! Quote Using Publisher
GarryP Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 If you have any feedback about the manual then MikeTO is usually open to hearing how it can be improved. If there is a particular part that was confusing then telling him about it in that thread couldn’t hurt. Quote
N Hodghton Posted August 26, 2024 Author Posted August 26, 2024 Thanks. I would be very reluctant to send feedback to MikeTO. The problem is that the manual is written to cover lots of differnt options, depending on how the reader wants to use Affinity. For example, I looked up 'page numbers and master pages' and there were two or more pages of information, which left me baffled. I came on this forum and you explained it in about four lines! Many thanks for that. Quote Using Publisher
GarryP Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 That’s fair enough and, of course, you don’t need to do something you aren’t comfortable doing. Good luck with the rest of your project. Quote

Many thanks for that. I'm very approachable, you can send me whatever feedback you like and I won't be offended. 🙂 I've written several complete page layout app manuals that included the type of information you were seeking but this manual wasn't intended to be one of those. I started it as a short guide to creating a book but I've been expanding it into a more complete manual over the past year. It still doesn't have introductory material though. It will be too late for you, but the updated version I'll share when 2.6 is released will include a section on creating your first document and adding page numbers to it. Publisher doesn't include templates or automated features like some apps do so it can be overwhelming to create your first documents in the best way. N Hodghton Posted August 26, 2024 Author Posted August 26, 2024 Thanks. I'll try to be quick. I went to school long before computers existed, and hardly handled them at work. After retiring more than 20 years ago I volunteered to edit a small cycling club magazine using Indesign CS6, until then I didn't know what Desk Top Publishing was! I now edit the magazine for the National Cycle Museum magazine. Because the Museum membership is very small they can't afford to to pay Adobe's subscription prices for the latest Indesign. CS6 won't work with Windows 11 and I'll have to upgrade my PC next year. I have the free trial Affinity Publisher and have been experimenting to see what I can do before I have to use it for real. Hence some very basic questions. I will buy Affinity Publisher whatever happens with the Museum magazine. Quote Using Publisher
