How to use the colorpicker in Affinity Designer 2?

Recommended Posts

In some regards the interface of Affinity Designer is a step backwards. The color picker is baffling. I have a shape selected and want to pick the color of another file which is open.

I select the color picker and move it to the dark blue on the left side:

And now I've got the same color for the fill color as before. Am I going totally gaga? Affinity Designer on macOS Big Sur.

For that particular Colour Picker (on Windows at least) you need to click the colour well (in the pop-up) after the colour has been picked to apply it.

In this way it works the same as the Colour Picker in, for example, the Colour Panel.

If you want the picked colour to be applied immediately you might like to try the Colour Picker Tool on the Tools Panel with “Apply to Selection” set to ON.

@beatrixwillius,

I want to add that the two colour pickers work a little different. While the Colour Picker Tool has some options that can be configured on the toolbar and it applies the colour immediately, the other colour picker in many of the colour palettes does not have any options but it let's you sample colours from your entire screen (= from outside the application window).

I think the problem there is that the pop-up disappears before you’re finished with it.

Picking outside Affinity works for me (V1, mac) with both picker types, 'panel' & 'tool'. For both I need to start picking in the workspace area of an Affinity document, then drag over the UI or outside the app window.

You are correct. I was not aware that I have to start dragging from the canvas outside of the app window. If you move the tool outside the window without dragging it does not work. My fault.
