beatrixwillius
In some regards the interface of Affinity Designer is a step backwards. The color picker is baffling. I have a shape selected and want to pick the color of another file which is open. I select the color picker and move it to the dark blue on the left side: And now I've got the same color for the fill color as before. Am I going totally gaga? Affinity Designer on macOS Big Sur. GarryP
For that particular Colour Picker (on Windows at least) you need to click the colour well (in the pop-up) after the colour has been picked to apply it. In this way it works the same as the Colour Picker in, for example, the Colour Panel.
beatrixwillius
Yup, I remembered that after some minutes, too. I found one problem with the stupid permissions. Version 2 must have a different bundle id because the permissions didn't carry over. But there was no dialog. I'll do more testing.
GarryP
If you want the picked colour to be applied immediately you might like to try the Colour Picker Tool on the Tools Panel with “Apply to Selection” set to ON.

While the Colour Picker Tool has some options that can be configured on the toolbar and it applies the colour immediately, the other colour picker in many of the colour palettes does not have any options but it let's you sample colours from your entire screen (= from outside the application window). d. beatrixwillius
The color picker tool works fine. But there must be something I'm doing wrong - something easy and stupid.
GarryP
If you can record and upload a full-screen (whole application UI) video showing us what you are doing we can probably tell you what you are doing wrong, if anything. beatrixwillius
beatrixwillius
Good idea. I'll do that.
beatrixwillius
Here is the video. First I use the Color Picker Tool and then I try the color picker from within Appearance. color picker.m4v
GarryP
Thanks for the video. I think the problem there is that the pop-up disappears before you’re finished with it. This doesn’t happen on Windows but I can’t check macOS to see if it’s just on your machine or not. beatrixwillius
beatrixwillius
Yes, I think so, too. I've tried on my iMac with Big Sur and the MacBook Air with Sonoma: both show the same problem. But it would be really weird if I was the first person to find this problem.

Staff MEB Posted August 23 Staff Share Posted August 23 Hi @beatrixwillius, Thanks for your report. As noted above this is a known issue that's already with dev. I've updated/bumped the report to bring it up to dev's attention again. beatrixwillius 1 Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software

I was not aware that I have to start dragging from the canvas outside of the app window. If you move the tool outside the window without dragging it does not work. My fault. d.
