Text replacements not working

Recommended Posts

Why are my customized text replacements (in System prefs> keyboard > text replacements) like

x*= × or

o/= ø or

+5*= ★★★★★ or

-infn=  - ∞

working here in this forum in Safari, but in no Affinity app? Other Non-Apple apps accept this text replacements with no problem.

Probably because Affinity text frames don't utilize Apple's NSText framework. Which they can't because otherwise they wouldn't be compatible with the Windows versions.
It works with third party text expanders, however. Keyboard Maestro can do it, among many others.

Your macOS text replacements will work in Affinity text fields, just not in a document where you want them to work.

Affinity uses its own text replacement system in documents to support different replacements for each language. This won't matter to everybody but does to those who set type in multiple languages. You can add your own text replacements to Affinity using Settings > AutoCorrect.

Yes, but that's in APu only.

Exactly, at least in those that are apparently based on NSText.
In Photo, you can e.g. use a field in the Metadata panel to temporarily input the shortcuts, then copy & paste into a text frame.

I see. I'd prefer using the global Mac replacements additionally and for the users typing in different languages, the Affinity replacements would help better.

I could not find any "AutoCorrect" in Photo or Designer, in Publisher it is more of a typo correction. Some of my replacements would simply get lost and the overview is not exactly helpful. Plus, the problem remains in Affinity Designer where I need Ø, × and ± often in technical drawings. I'm not a fan of unnecessary workarounds, just because Affinity, coming first for Mac "forgot" about the Mac Text replacements...

APu = ? Aah, Publisher? APh and APu...

Sorry, I was not familiar with this abbreviation.

Oh, and sometimes I wanted to open the Emoji/Symbol Panel - but no panel appeared. Which I consider another bug.

That was my guess. And also my fear when Affinity went Windows...

Which app are you in? And how did you try to open it? And are you talking of an Apple panel, or an Affinity panel?

I was in Photo and Designer and selected "Emoji/Symbols" from the "Edit" menu in Affinity (last entry).

I just checked it before and today it was working as expected. I just noticed a couple of times, it's not always opening up the symbols panel and I can't see why at the moment. No other dialog box was open (which can block the appearance of the symbol palette)

Thanks for those details.

First, Photo doesn't have the Symbols panel, though it does have the Glyphs Browser panel. We need to be sure which one you're talking about.

Designer has both of them.

Next, do you ever use multiple monitors? If so, panels can try to appear on monitors that are disconnected. So that's something else to check.

@JoJu means the global MacOS Character Viewer which is – confusingly enough – listed in every Edit menu as "Emoji & Symbols" (at least on Ventura).

I don't remember the default MacOS keyboard shortcut for "Emoji & Symbols" as I usually modify many of those shortcuts anyway (hey, my muscle memory goes as far back as System 7 and I don't like to change my habits all too often… ;))  But it could be that an Affinity shortcut conflicts with it, and overrides it.

🌐E but I think, it's not Affinity's fault alone: I just tried to activate it in Publisher, searched for the globe symbol, added it to favorites and closed the panel.

Then switched to Safari to type this post and had to use 🌐E twice to get it started. And I don't think, Affinity uses any shortcuts with the 🌐 symbol as it has to be sooooo compatible with Windows – I don't recall it on the PC's keyboard I've seen last time 6 months ago and am very happy to not have to work with this any longer. In fact, I had a Mac keyboard connected to it which served 16 years well and free of glitches. I loved to see Admin's faces when they were trying to find @ on it 😁
