Reinstall softwares with all his preferences

Recommended Posts

🇬🇧 Hi, I'm going to change my Mac and I'm going to reinstall the Affinity suite.

BUT I don't want to have to reconfigure EVERYTHING (interfaces and assets) for this new machine from scratch!…
I'll start by installing from the .dmg files provided by Serif:

https://store.serif.com/fr/update/macos/designer/2/

https://store.serif.com/fr/update/macos/photo/2/

https://store.serif.com/fr/update/macos/publisher/2/

Then, I would place the old files in the same places in the system folder of the new machine.
Here are the files that I think I need to place back in the system folders to find my interfaces on the three software.
I added a screenshot of the App Cleaner & Unistaller software which completes my list.

IMPORTANT: If there are missing files or if the manipulation will never be completely effective, please react in this thread.
NOTE: I am not sure if I should replace the folders located in “Home > Library > HTTP Storages”. I think the installation will create them (to be confirmed).

https://store.serif.com/fr/update/macos/designer/2/

https://store.serif.com/fr/update/macos/photo/2/

https://store.serif.com/fr/update/macos/publisher/2/

If you use Migration Assistant when you first start up your shiny new Mac, it should transfer all your applications, preferences and settings automatically without any need for you to make any manual changes.

It takes a bit of time but it is very efficient.

Affinity Photo 2.5.3,  Affinity Designer 2.5.3, Affinity Publisher 2.5.3, Mac OSX 14.5, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" Intel.

hi @h_d, thanks for the feedback, but for once, because I have time, I'm going to do a clean install, without going through the wizard for third-party applications... Just to start off on a fresh, clean foot!…

Thanks @Pšenda for link. 🙂

I doubt it's useful to copy Cache files.

And I wonder if it may be risky to copy files from the hidden system volume "private":

  • The file paths may be different and the containing files may be registered by macOS in a kind of "safety daemon" or for the general file data base.
  • On my setup it seems to contain hardware related files, they might confuse your newer mac with a different hardware specification (or any macOS internal meta data) if they get copied.

For your desire to avoid "to reconfigure EVERYTHING (interfaces and assets)" it should be sufficient to copy files from the "User" folder or even your user Library folder only but hardly from another system folder. Every user gets individual setups and resources displayed in their Affinity app, this differences are quite stored likely in subfolders of the main "User" folder.

Hi @thomaso, thanks for your feedback. And no, of course the “cache” files (which are created and updated depending on the context) are not to be copied (see my list of folders on a black background in my post).

For this kind of procedure, and from experience, I proceed in stages until I finally find my bearings... Well, if that doesn't work, I also made screenshots for the interfaces (persona) of the 3 software. Regarding the personalized keyboard shortcuts, I use Keyboard Maestro. 🙂

🇬🇧 Hi, Hi, I now have a new Mac. I copied the files and folders to the right places (see the screenshot on a black background) on the new machine... and everything works perfectly, with all my preferences found. A real joy!… 😀

When I think of the software installations in the house opposite with the red tiles and the hundreds of elements scattered everywhere in the system and user folders... Another time!…
