Affinity Designer Keeps Crashing

Recommended Posts

Hi @wmaehr and welcome to the forums,

Could you let us know what you're doing with the file when you experience the crash... So far I'm not seeing any issues or crashes with your file open selecting different layers or editing text...

Could you also confirm if you're using AD on Mac or Windows and let us know which version of the OS and your system specs...

Hi @Hangman,

Sorry, yes, should have shared that this is Affinity Designer 2.5.3 on macOS 14.5.

The app hangs the moment I try to edit the embedded document masked in the background like this (about a second after clicking the embedded file, I get a SBOD):

image.thumb.gif.62b325ab45615927fddb5e84eb308251.gif

Part of the problem is that because of the file being embedded, I also do not know how I can get access to that file by itself, extract it and just edit it separately.

Thanks,

Wolf

Hi @wmaehr,

Many thanks for the details...

I've yet to encounter the SBOD with your file so I'm slightly unsure why you're experiencing it...

With the layer selected in the Layers panel, you should (assuming it doesn't hang for you) be able to click the Edit Document option in the Context toolbar. This opens the embedded file in a second tab where you can edit it. Once edited you can close the tab and it should reflect the changes made in the main document...

Be mindful that there are a lot of locked layers in the file so you may (or may not) struggle to select certain layers until you unlock either the layers themselves or the Group that contains them which you can do by clicking the padlock icon to the right of the Layer name in the Layers panel...

Let us know if this works and if not what is happening or whether you still just see the SBOD...

Hi again, @Hangman,

Here a screen recording of what happens when I open the embedded file.

Sadly, it doesn't show the Spinning Beachball of Death, even a screenshot doesn't record that :(
The SBOD shows up about a second after double-clicking the embedded file.

If you are actually able to open the embedded file, could you?

  1. Extract and send me the embedded file as an AD document? Then I can try to salvage things differently and just avoid embedding other files.
  2. Save the file I've provided again from your side and send that for me to try if there's anything wrong with the format? I have encountered this problem on my AD before with embedded files and thus actually re-created the whole template.

This only started to be a problem with this file after I had saved and re-opened it. As long as I kept AD running, it was fine. I also wonder if it has something to do with the file sitting on an iCloud drive.

I'm otherwise super happy with AD, but designing these jerseys is my main use for AD and this makes it all rather frustrating.

Thanks a lot,
Wolf

Hi @wmaehr,

It's strange why this is hanging Designer for you... I'm still not seeing any issues with the file... I would strongly recommend moving your file to your internal Hard Drive rather than opening it via the Cloud, you may find this is the cause of the issue...

I've attached the following two files:

2025-appendix-jersey-resaved-embedded.afdesign - This is the original file you uploaded simply opened then resaved
2025-appendix-jersey-linked.zip - This contains the original designer file with all the associated files linked rather than embedded so you can open them individually

Let us know how you get on...

Original File Resaved

2025-appendix-jersey-resaved-embedded.afdesign

Original File with Linked Assets

2025-appendix-jersey-linked.zip

Thanks, heaps, @Hangman!

First, thanks for the .zip file, as I was able to open the background file in there and so I can use that for further tweaks as neccessary. :)

Next, let me say that since before raising this issue, I had moved the file to a local drive in the hope that that would resolve the problem. I also, since then, tried the file I had uploaded, but also to no avail.

Now, to the interesting stuff:

  1. Your re-saved file still crashes my AD
  2. The .zip file lets me open the background without any problems
  3. The .zip file also contains `2025-appendix-jersey-resaved-linked.afdesign` and with THAT file, I can open the linked embedded background files without an issue and I notice that saving it saves the linked file.
  4. When I try to re-save the `…embedded.afdesign` document, the "Save document" progress goes to pretty much 99% and gets stuck. MacOS doesn't indicate the app to be hung, but for all practical sense I'm now on this screen for 5 minutes with nothing happening…
  5. When I change the `…embedded.afdesign` document to "Prefer Linked", the save dialogue hangs within the first 5%, much like in #4. MacOS doesn't indicate the app to be hung, but for all practical sense I'm now on this screen for 5 minutes with nothing happening…

It really seems to be a matter of the embedded vs. linked document. :$

I've also attached the Console and the Crash Reports for one of the recent crashes.

Hope this helps with the troubleshooting? Any otehr info I can provide?

Thanks,
Wolf

PS: I will be switching to "Linked Files" and local files to be replicated onto the cloud going forward, hoping that that will steer me clear from most trouble.
