Hey @ravencroftgraphics3d, Welcome to the forum.

To import an Affinity Palette (.afpalette):

  1. Open the Swatches panel if it's not already open (Window > Swatches).
  2. Click the hamburger menu at the upper-right of the Swatches panel, hover over Import Palette, and select the appropriate option to import as an Application or Document Pallet.

Here's the Affinity Swatches Panel help page for additional information.

Application and System palettes are described on the help page I mentioned in my previous comment. (Side note: System palettes are specific to Mac; they’re not available on Windows.)

Application—these palettes are saved within Affinity Designer. These palettes are available to any Affinity Designer document.

System—these palettes are saved to your operating system. These palettes are available within Affinity Designer and other apps installed on your system.

I’m not sure why Document Palette is disabled… maybe someone more familiar with Macs can provide some insight.

I’m not sure what you’re asking. Can you explain your question a bit more?

.afdesign are Affinity Designer files, whereas the Affinity palette files are .afpalette.

The .afdesign files are Designer documents, they are the things you would normally create and save.

You don’t install them, you just open them, as you would open a .doc document in Word for example.

I’m not sure what you mean by that but, as mentioned above, .afdesign files are just Designer documents.

When you create a new document in Designer you are creating what will be an .afdesign file when you save it.
