Hi,

I have Affinity 2 versions of Publisher, Photo and Designer (but am more familiar with Publisher, and I am trying to create a basic outline silhouette of a 1950's wedding photo, so that I can give each person a number (in the silhoutte) and then add their names to display underneath the original photo.

Can anyone suggest a straight forward way for a novice to try to do this please?

Seeing as how you own Designer I would use its Pencil tool and create an outline of each person by manually drawing it, then you could place an Art Text text frame number and group it with the person's outline. You could then hide the outlines (set opacity to 0 for fill and stroke) and just have the numbers.

Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

… or simpler, with stroke only, no fill:

  1. With the PenTool draw the contour for 1 person.
  2. Copy this curve layer multiple times (cmd-J).
  3. With the MoveTool adjust the position + size of each copy.
  4. Adjust each curve by modifying the shape or deleting nodes to avoid overlapping with someone in foreground:

One option is to lose the silhouettes entirely, and just use numbers (here, white with a black drop shadow, using FX, so they stand out). I used the Text Tool in Designer to combine a string of numbers, but you could use the Artistic Text tool too. I included a few outlines, but I think it might get a bit messy and cluttered because there are so many people in this photo. This could be done in any of the 3 apps, depending on which tools you plan to use.

You can use the Pencil, Pen or other tools (even ellipses around faces) if you need the outlines.

It's certainly possible but it's going to be a lot of effort if you are not fully familiar with APhoto yet
