Wow I can't get symbols to work for me at all.

When changing or duplicating a symbol it keeps updating the icon of the symbol for some reason.
What.png.bf971ffc3eeb8ff33e571c534d123043.png

And it refuses to sync the symbols in my project.  Changing one doesn't change the other ones.
If I have sync on it just changes the icon in the pane.  If I have sync off it won't change all the symbol objects (not that it does anyway tho).

Then I tried to add a new symbol and it crashed the program.  TF is this thing?
I've watched two tutorials but I still don't get it.  My symbols aren't acting like what I saw on the videos.

There should be a flow chart for symbol processes.

Do you change the orientation of the symbol, or the orientation of the layer inside the symbol?

rotating the symbol instance in a document does not change the symbol in the library.

rotating the layer inside the symbol impacts the symbol in the library.

can you please provide a screen recording? It should include the relevant panels:

  • symbols
  • layers
  • transform panel
  • navigator panel

I was making a video on a fresh project but it's working now.  Something about my previous project it didn't like.
This is what it looks like when the layers are working:
Working.png.364a879e1d54bae8e5d5e94a24679aa9.png

It's odd to me that it auto generated a group for each triangle when I duplicated it.

This is the previous project.  Notice the empty group and the dotted lines.  I don't even remember now if I had got it working finally, but I think that I gave up and just did things manually.  I expanded the groups to see the icons:
Previous.png.ffea2f75ee9649bfb42c6de76eb21b7e.png

The Symbols pane:

The layers are named epic because I don't know what to call them.  It's that "epic" behind person style that I was going for, like the epic kid:

If a dev sees this, there were multiple crashes and they were from trying to drag a symbol group layer over top another one.
Also getting crashes when dragging stock images into a large project.

Be careful not to nest an instance of a symbol inside another instance of that symbol. The app should be coded to prevent the creation of an infinitely recursing object structure, but that hasn't been done rigorously; although a little improvement was made a while ago, the user can easily create such a structure accidentally and provoke a crash.

Symbols can take only one child layer. In case you want to add multiple, a group is required - it seems Affinity does this automatically.

It would be great if you file bug reports only when you have the actual file at hand for upload and screenshots / screen recordings so that others (the Affinity team specifically) can reproduce.

Note: this is a Questions topic, not a Bugs topic.

But yes, it's nice to have all the info available even for answering questions.

Noted. Applies for this kind of questions, too.

Too many times users reported issues (as questions or bugs does not matter) and when someone steps in trying to help the OP said he deleted the file, or he cannot reproduce the issue any more.

That is what probably happened, yes.  I was thinking myself if I had made an infinite loop.

It's a question about the method for making the symbols work properly; I don't even know if it's a bug or not.  There's several replies here but not an answer to my query about the method to use them; seeing as I was getting different behavior than the tutorials.
In a fresh project it magically started working again (just to make me look bad of course; my computer likes to troll me), so if it's a one-time random occurrence then I'm not interested in following up with it.
If it happens again then I will do a full bug report in that forum area.
