When selecting an item, the below 'help' information is shown.
The 'Alt' key however will make a copy of the selected item!  
Alternative first move the object and then hold down the Alt key will ignore snapping according to the information.

Yes, Alt and Ctrl both clone the item you're dragging if you press one of them then drag with the Move Tool. And if you used Alt, it will ignore snapping. 

And yes, if you first start dragging and then press Alt it won't clone. (Unlike dragging and then pressing Ctrl, which will still clone.)

This could be clearer in the Status Bar. This is somewhat explained in the Help for duplicating objects (but that addresses only Ctrl, not Alt) and somewhat in the Help for Snapping, but not completely anywhere in the Help that I can see.

(Note: On macOS, these would be Cmd and Opt, not Ctrl and Alt.)
