And I am not permitted to open 1.4.2 beta 5.

post-26329-0-40266500-1466638012_thumb.pngWhat's up?

I have legally downloaded AP from app store.  Now, today, when I open AP 1.4.2 (beta 5), I get the message the retail version is required..

I have the retail version!   And, when I attempt to download the retails version again, it just opens.

What’s up?   What’s going on?

Please help.

Kind regards,

David4

Update.   I deleted the original application and downloaded it again.    Beta still demands I have to make the purchase.

What do I do?

You delete the now obsolete beta 5 versions & use the 1.4.2 retail ones.

Hi, I think you got an answer here too.

(Trash the beta first, then install the MAS version.) Hope that helps.

The beta no longer works when the new MAS version is released as far as I know.

- Affinity Photo 2.3.0
- Affinity Designer 2.3.0
-Affinity Publisher 2.3.0

MacBook Pro 16 GB
MacOS Sonoma 14.1.2

What date did beta 5 become obsolete?

The day you installed the 1.4.2 retail version.

EDIT: If this is still unclear, MEB's post at the end of the "Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.4.2 - RC1)" beta forum topic here may help.

R C-R:   Not everyone is on the "inside" and "know this"

Serif:   Be courteous, and thoughtful

Let everyone know that an Affinity Photo version has been removed.

It’s the right thing to do.

You are not playing nice when an application quits and users of the application don’t know why.

Cheers

David

Since there will always (hopefully!) be newbies---and the occasional oldie who I won't name here that sometimes forgets between updates---there should be a prominent sticky in the update notice warning that the current beta will now be obsolete and will no longer work.

Hi a4nuser,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

That's the version number of latest the beta.

Affinity Photo Beta is a test/development version we provide here in the forums for customers willing to try/test new features and give feedback while it's still being developed. You can find them pinned at the top in respective section in the Affinity Beta Support area. When all new features are implemented, stable and working correctly we submit it to the Mac App Store. From this point on - after you update the application thought the App Store app - the beta ceases to work since it already served its purpose (testing). All new features are now integrated in the commercial version we sell on the Mac App Store.

The Beta version is NOT an alternative to the Mac App Store version and should not be used in its place for production work since it's subject to changes during the development and as such doesn't provide a reliable environment for production work. It is is distributed as an independent application with its own presets, brushes, configuration files etc which will not get picked by the Mac App Store version (unless you export them as affinity brush/preset files and re-import them in the Mac App Store version). It may also be reset to its defaults in certain circumstances, introduce file format incompatibilities with previous versions and overall have more stability issues due to the changes introduced in the code.

Currently Affinity Photo and Designer Betas (1.4.2 beta 5) are both expired, since all their improvements were already integrated in the latest Mac App Store version (1.4.2).

The next Beta cycle - version 1.5 Beta - which will start in the next couple days, will include a considerable number of new features for testing/bug report and feedback purposes and should only be installed by those willing to do so. It is NOT intended to be used as a replacement for the commercial version (Mac App Store).

Lillie G:  Here is a screen shot of beta 5.   I still have beta 5 since this Mac has been offline.  Please point out, the best you can where the obsolete sticky is placed.

Cheers.

I think we have a miscommunication here.  I said there "should" be, not that there is, a warning in the Update notice itself so that people would be reminded not to panic when their beta no longer worked.  I've done it myself...fairly recently...because I simply forgot that the beta would no longer open because the MAS had been updated to equal it.  Sorry if I wasn't clear.

The obvious place for this notice would be in the beta itself, as a modification to the 'Retail Version Required' notice. Maybe something like the attached would be OK for those not familiar with beta software limitations?

David, MAS stands for Mac App Store.  When we say MAS, we're talking about the purchased version available in the the Mac App Store.  And I didn't know what it meant the first time I heard it either.  Can't remember if I asked someone or googled it.
