F5subli Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 Affinity supports the .EPS file format. There is nothing to stop Affinity extending support for the full Postscript format. Admittedly, .ps files usually open correctly, but only as 1-page files. When opening a multi-page .ps file, the contents of all pages overlap on one page. Apple has, for some unknown reason, stopped supporting Postscript in OSX, which has annoyed me and probably a great many prepress professionals greatly. I know the format is old, but still heavily used in the industry. It would be great if Affinity opened multi-page Postscript files correctly. Quote
MikeTO Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 Can you not export to PDF from the app that created the PostScript file or are working with existing PostScript files? wonderings Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 I don't know of any shops still using PS files, even EPS files never come around anymore. I would say PDF is the future, but it has been the present standard for a while now. I have a feeling it is a niche group of people still clinging to antiquated software for some reason. Does the RIP you are using not support PDF at all? Quote
F5subli Posted August 2, 2024 Author Posted August 2, 2024 It's not about getting around the problem by converting PS->PDF in other programs. When you do something occasionally, you can take more time and do the same thing differently. But when there's a need to use multi-page .ps files frequently, it takes a lot of time to constantly work around the problem. That's when using Affinity Publisher becomes unprofitable in terms of time. Although all its other functionality would be very good for doing the rest of the work. But this one shortcoming discourages the use of Affinity for this particular purpose. I think it's not much of a stretch for developers to improve this one little thing - opening multi-page .ps files on separate pages in Affinity Publisher/Designer, rather than overlaying everything on a single page. After all, postscript support is already implemented. I wrote about this in the bug reporting section, but someone made me aware that since there is basically no official support for Postscript in Affinity programs, the reported problem should be scrubbed into the wishful thinking section. So I'm writing If this little detail had been included, it would probably have made Affinity easier to use for many users, myself included. Thank you very much in advance and apologies for my poor English Quote
MikeTO Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 I wasn't suggesting to use a PS to PDF converter but to export to PDF from the original app. Which app created the PS files? Or were these PS files created decades ago in an obsolete app? Or were these PS files created from a proprietary app that doesn't support PDF? Thank you very much in advance and apologies for my poor English Personally I don't think it makes much sense working in compatibility with formats that are on the way out, or really should be gone already. Are you in a print shop still working with PS files? Still working with film and chemistry? The transition with direct to plate, PDF, Indesign and modern RIPs has made life so much easier. Ultimately I don't see Affinity going back and brining this support, especially when there are a host of other things people would like to see and a much larger user base would actually use them. Acrobat Pro still comes with Distiller so you can convert to a PDF easily with that. Not sure when the last time I opened that app. Quote
F5subli Posted August 2, 2024 Author Posted August 2, 2024 For certain reasons I prefer .ps to .pdf , in specific applications. Also, I have a large archive of them. I also get this format. I won't explain here why. How programmers could implement this little detail is great. If not, I can manage without Affinity too. I think this is probably not the right place to discuss the sense of postscript. Sorry to be a bother. Regards to all. MikeTO 1 Quote
