I cannot seem to get my Apple Pencil to play nice when drawing and painting in Affinity Photo. I’ve done a reset of my iPad, I restored everything back to factory default in APhoto, I’ve tried making things bigger… not sure what else to do.

I draw a line and what comes out is a scribble. Often I end up with lines on the other side of the page from where I am working. It’s to the point I can’t finish my illustrations for my book. I lose so much time going back and back to find the original accidental pencil marks. A two hour project is taking 4 hours. It does it with the smudge tool as well- it’s like I’m dragging the pencil across the screen but the pencil hasn’t touched the pad.

I know there was an issue earlier with this in 2022, but I see no info in 2024. Please help!

PS. Your site will no longer let me login with my email (above). I changed it in the last two years but it should still work. Any suggestions?

There are two sites.

  1. The Affinity Store
  2. These forums.

Accounts and passwords are separate between the two sites, though of course you could use the same email addresses and same passwords for both. But assuming you have used at least different passwords, make sure you're not trying to use your forum password for the Store, or vice versa. This can be a problem if you're using a password manager that mixes up the two sites, or if you have to select the password manually and pick the wrong one.

Each site also has a Reset (or lost) Password that you can use during login if the login isn't working.

That's not something I have personally experienced.

First, have you tried a different drawing/painting app to rule out basic issues with the Apple Pencil itself?

Next, please tell us which model of iPad you're using, which release of iPadOS, and more info about your Apple Pencil as there are at least 3 kinds of Apple Pencil.

Also, can you provide a screenshot of the application workspace, including the Layers panel with the layer you're painting on selected?

Finally, can you provide a screen recording of the problem, please?

Walt,

Thank you for replying (again).

‘Here are your questions and the answers to the best of my ability.

First, have you tried a different drawing/painting app to rule out basic issues with the Apple Pencil itself? I tried it in notes and in Procreate without a problem. Sometimes it works and sometimes it works fine. I do stabilize my hand on the screen when using the pencil. Would that cause a problem?

Next, please tell us which model of iPad you're using, which release of iPadOS, and more info about your Apple Pencil as there are at least 3 kinds of Apple Pencil. iPad is 17.5.1 , iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (5th generation), running OS17.5.1. Pencil is Apple Pencil 2 model no. A2051

Also, can you provide a screenshot of the application workspace, including the Layers panel with the layer you're painting on selected?

Finally, can you provide a screen recording of the problem, please?

Thank you for replying!

I think that might cause problems, but I'm not sure. Can you try without doing that?

Also, there's a Setting under Tools for "Touch for gestures only". If you're not using that, you might try it to see if it helps.
