Hi @Mike 31 and welcome to the forums,

  1. What file format is the Photo in question?
  2. Are you on Mac or Windows and which version of the OS are you running?

You should just be able to drag the photo into the viewport of the Affinity Photo UI without any need for a Pixel Layer but you can create a new pixel layer by clicking the Add Pixel Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel (to the left of wastebin icon) or by selecting Layer > New Layer if you already have a document open...

Affinity Designer 2.6.3 | Affinity Photo 2.6.3 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.3
MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse
HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse

Just down loaded free trial, and cannot import photo as prompted to select RGB pixel layer, but this is not available to me?

A screenshot of the complete application window and the error message would help, along with a description of what you mean by "import" and what you did that generated the error message.

Please make sure the screenshot includes the Layers panel.

If you try to switch to the Develop, Liquify or Tone Mapping personas in Affinity Photo with an incompatible / no layer selected, you will see the following prompt:

@Mike 31 Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

I suspect you're using an Image layer currently. Please right-click this layer and select rasterise... to convert it to a Pixel Layer, which should then work with the aforementioned Personas as required.

I hope this helps!
