Hello,

The last two times I have exported my Affinity Publisher (version 2.5.3) document, I have consistently got the attached message. The exported format is PDF, resolution 144, which doesn't seem much, and which is why I am surprised at the message I keep getting.

Note: The export file is fine, but what about when the book is finished and I export to PDF with a much higher resolution?

Your reply is much appreciated.

Henriette

All I know is that the Disk Usage Warning limit can be changed in Settings>Performance. These are the defaults:

The help files don't offer much useful information:

How large is your Publisher document? Are the images linked or embedded?

Thanks, h_d. 🙂 I'll try twerking the settings.

My document is 44.8 mb large - so not so huge. The images are linked. My Mac would crash if I embedded them. ;-)

The information about the RAM/Disk settings in the Help isn’t very useful at all.

Having to tweak a setting in an ad-hoc manner just to see if you can make things better makes for a bit of a sub-optimal experience.

For instance, when it says “warned about disk usage”, which disk does it mean? The disk where the application is stored (with the Assets, etc. and the recovery file, if any), or the disk where the document was last saved to, or the boot disk (if the document has not yet been saved), or the disk where the last export was stored to, or something else?

It would be nice to have more information on this sort of thing without having to ask questions in the forums.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble @Henriette W!

The Disk Warning you're seeing means the app is using a higher value of 'storage space' on your macs drive, that you have set in the Affinitys app preferences.

For example, if you set the Affinity Disk Warning value to 32768MB, the app will only warn you once it has used more than this value.

The Affinity apps use this 'storage space' on your machine once the memory (RAM) has been used - this can be used by the Affinity app, as well as macOS and any other apps running on your system.

Can you please provide a screenshot of your current settings under Affinity Publisher 2 > Settings > Performance?

This sounds like there may be an issue with the Publisher document itself - as the app shouldn't crash when embedding resources. Does this crash (& disk warning) only happen with this file, or do you see this happen with other documents please? :)

I already boosted the performance and the next time I exported, I did not get the warning.

As for crashing, I am not sure it would happen, but my Mac has only 8 Gb RAM, and I can feel how it's having problems when I work with sizable files. I see no reason to embed the images. Linking works fine, and I always export for PDF when the printing house needs my book. Essentially that means that my document stays with me.

No problem at all, thanks for letting me know!

If you are happy to continue to Link the files and this works for your setup then it does sound like the best option for you :)

If the problem completely hinders your workflow, you possibly can split a demanding Affinity layout document. Either via the "Book" feature (with its requirements / limitations) or just as two separate documents containing different pages. In the latter case you would need to either combine the two .afpubs before export (e.g. via menu "Dokument" > "Add Pages From File…") or export two PDF files and combine them after export.
