ISBN-13 and ISSN barcode

Recommended Posts

Can Affinity add  an ISSN/ISBN to Publisher?  It is essential for people doing books and magazines, the home turf for publisher.

I believe they used to do it in the Serif tools before  Affinity.

Like Affinity Publisher, the last version of Serif PagePlus included a QR Code Tool but no barcode tools. Unlike APub, the QR Code feature in PP allows the user to specify the error correction level.

You've probably been here long enough to know that Serif doesn't really answer that kind of question, and that requests for new function go in the Feedback forum, not Questions.

Is it "essential" in APubOr is it enough to create the barcode, for example, using one of the various online tools and import the resource like any other?

An ISSN/ISBN code generator is more essential in APub than a QR code generator, where you can also get numerous free generators.

An ISSN barcode is essentially(!) an EAN-13 barcode beginning with the digits 977 and preceded by the letter sequence ISSN.

An ISBN barcode is rather more complicated, since it needs to have the OCR-A representation of the ISBN above the barcode itself. All ISBNs currently begin with the digits 978, but once all of the possible numbers using that prefix have been allocated they will begin with 979.

I know all that as I have both an ISSN and a series of ISBN's   It would be nice if I could more easily drop them into APublisher documents without having to go to a 3rd party generator.

For the avoidance of doubt, I didn’t think for a minute that you wouldn’t know! I was merely pointing out that (a) an ISSN/ISBN feature was never added to PagePlus and (b) an ISBN generator would require the presence of an OCR-A font. Serif’s ‘legacy’ applications were always bundled with a large selection of fonts, whereas the Affinity apps have only ever offered fonts as optional extras.

Interesting, with the Canva buy out are you thinking that OCR-A font may be an optional [subscription] extra or that the barcode generator may be an optional [subscription] add on? Whilst that is the Canva model, I hope they, Canva, realize the reason why a lot of people came to Affinity from Adobe was to escape the subscription model.   In any case there are a lot of free ISSN/ISBN bar code generators out there.

I think It might be work my while generating, now, the barcode graphics for the other 95 unused ISBN's I have.

Neither, actually! I was just making the observation that for Serif’s legacy software products you had to jump through hoops to avoid installing a bunch of fonts, whereas with the Affinity apps you need to go out of your way to install them (even if they’re available for free).

Just looked and I have OCR-A installed. Though I can't remember when or why I installed it.
It appears to be a 2002 Adobe font.
