adam1762
Is this normal or do I have something set wrong? The brush artifacts when painting are annoying, I have a 4K HDR monitor but on my old FHD monitor there was something like that too, just not as severe. What should I do to make the brush strokes smooth?
walt.farrell
What color format and bit-depth is your file? RGB-8 can exhibit color banding that you wouldn't get in RGB-16, for example. adam1762
The screen from the examples is 8Bit, I'm posting 16 bit, you can see that it's better, but it's not there yet, it's still not perfect.
cgidesign
You can check various threads from since 2019 here: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/search/&tags=afp-1450 Logged as bug afp-1450 Or other threads where the same issue is discussed but without getting the bug tag from support: I.e: The conclusion is, there is no solution except from working in 32 bit linear which opens another can of worms. EDIT: There is another issue with Affinity that is related to the above:
adam1762
The subject was raised five years ago, and they were still unable to deal with one thing - such a basic thing, which instead of professional work, is only amateurish. I continue to have to experiment with additional blurring because they can't fix such a basic thing for so many years. What's the point of them giving a 50% discount and a 6 month trial version, my patience is really running out and I think I'll go back to Adobe, I'll pay, but at least I won't be annoyed anymore and I'll save a lot of time. What a shame!
cgidesign
I understand your frustration. i keep using Affinity for those parts where it works for me and use other software for other parts. An example is Krita (open source) when it comes to painting. Example with respect to the discussed banding: Left is Krita right is Affinity: In both cases I used an airbrush from the default set of each software. I adjusted the presets a bit to let them look similar and did a few mousclicks to get the yellow paint. The result is obvious. Krita is better in the 8bit image and better in the 16bit version. 8 bit: 16 bit (I checked twice - the right one is really the 16bit version from Affinity Photo):
