Can I go back to the handles of the gradient tool used in a mask to tweak the mask or must I always re-draw the gradient?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

One thing that has always bothered me is when I add a mask to a layer and then use the gradient tool to make either a linear, radial, etc gradient and then want to later go back to the mask and tweak it, the "handles" of the gradient tool are no longer available to work with and I have to instead "re-draw" the gradient over again. I would love if there were a way to be able to "see" the gradient tool "handles" when clicking on the mask layer -- that I just do not know about. Is there? Or is this just a wish I have for future upgrades on Affinity Photo? Thank you for any help with this.

All Affinity apps allow you to use a vector object as a mask, and its gradient fill will remain editable. The opacity of the stops in the gradient will create the masking effect.

Designer also has the Transparency Tool for editable gradient masking of objects.

A gradient applied to a raster (pixel) layer is always destructive and cannot be edited later.

On the other hand, a gradient applied to a vector layer is editable.

If you mask using a vector object (rectangle, ellipse, etc.) then you will be able to edit that gradient later.
