How to automatically sequentially number fields after making position changes.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone i am a new affinity user. I am utlilizing publisher to create a crossword book. my problem is about the numbering of the puzzles, let me explain better. Let's say i have created 10 games numbered from 1 to 10 and then i decide to insert one in the fifth place, now i want the numbering of those that were from the fifth to the tenth to be updated. How do I make the numbering automatic so that if there are any changes during the processing ( insertions moves or deletion of puzzles) I am not forced to change the number manually? I hope I explained myself well and I hope the translator did a good job😅

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, David. :)

If you have one puzzle per page, a page number token on the master page will automatically give you the correct number on each regular page, and the numbering will remain correct when you rearrange the pages.

Or, if page numbering won't do it (perhaps because there are pages with other information besides the puzzles) you can use a Paragraph Text Style with Numbering setup, so that anything using that Text Style will get the next number, and the numbers will adjust automatically if you move things around.

how can I use Paragraph Text Style ?

Hello @david82,

this help page explaines it:

https://affinity.help/publisher2/en-US.lproj/index.html

Basically you can have multiple/unlimited numbered lists in a Publisher document. The trick is to give the lists an individual name. In your case you could give those Paragaph Text Styles in the 'Bullets and numbering' section names like 'crossword001', 'crossword002' ... and so on. Each crossword will have its own numbering.

One important thing: you have to check next to the list's name 'Global'. That way it works across your entire document.

I think it's also important to set the Restart Numbering option correctly. I generally use "Restart Numbering: Manual Only" for this purpose.
