Affinity Designer 1.5 sneak peek: Constraints and Symbols

MEB

Recommended Posts

MEB,

Thanks for the sneak peak, very exciting! I can't wait to try 1.5 out. The new features look amazing and I'm sure that there are lots of other goodies as well. In addition to the symbols and other goodies that are being added, I'm personally happy to see that Godzilla is a part of the Affinity team ;) (even though he appears to be slacking off in the video).

Hokusai

PS. I'm always hoping for my two personal pet features to be added to 1.5, a "Hide/Show All" (with a shortcut) and a preference for zooming behavior so I can permanently banish the scrubbing zoom from Designer forever!

Awesome!

Hope that Symbols also permits per-instance overrides, like Illustrator does.

(I apologize for using the beaten-to-death illustrator comparison, I only mention because Sketch also has Symbols, but they also cannot have overridden properties, which severely limits how they can be used for repetitive elements like providing UI comps with buttons in various highlight/select/disabled states)

Symbols allow for per-instance overrides and specialisation (adding/deleting structure from each instance individually whilst still being able to add/delete from all instances if desired) :)

Hi, what I really desire is the "Pages" feature to have multiple pages in a document. That's really necessary for the layout process of books or brochures. When can I expect that feature?

Keep up the good work!

Cheers...

Hi Hombre,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

Pages will be implemented in a future version. It will be probably introduced with Affinity Publisher (for desktop publishing) available later this year as a public Beta if everything goes well.

About pages, I was hoping that you implemented it similarly to how Sketch has it (I'm thinking that's maybe what Hombre meant).  When I do UI design, I like to have a scratch page, then Mockups, and then an export page.  I know I could just duplicate artboards, but it's not the same, Pages allow me to also differentiate between different directions altogether without creating a new document.  Anyway just my two cents.

What guys are doing is great, simplifying other bloated software giants, while improving a lot.  I pray you do the same in Publisher (have you seen inDesign lately? Jeezus! it's daunting).  I'm looking for an alternate and will be happy to beta test later this year.

I'm not sure what you mean.

We don't need a dumbed down version of inDesign. We need a Desktop Publishing application that beats inDesign.

While inDesign may be daunting to you it's geared towards a professional market and we need a professional application to do that.

There is nothing near in the market at the moment that rivals inDesign for its depth etc., when it comes to professional publishing.

That's why we need Publisher to rival that and not something that dumbs it down.

Thanks for creating a brilliant solution Serif and to continue to keep improving it. New features look great, and I noticed a little Star maker there also :)

Will being able to hold down space bar allow me to move around objects as I create them? Aka. Illustrator, Fireworks etc. Still miss this :) Either way, keep up the great work. Looking forward to Publisher also.

Totally agree, I'm really looking forward to the Beta, or even an Alpha version :-)

Hi asantos,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

If you already bought the application, there a customer Beta you can install if you are willing to try the new features while they are in development.

The latest beta (Designer 1.5 Beta 6) is available for download here. You must keep the Mac App Store version installed to be able to run the Beta.

Also note that files created with version 1.5 Beta are NOT compatible with previous versions.
