Hi all,

I have the following problem and question. I search the forum but I did not find a similar problem, so I created a new post.

I am creating a photo book in Publisher (version 2.5.0 on a Windows 11 PC with Ryzen 7 3700X, 64 GB RAM). One moment during the creating, when I added the photos and text, I noticed that when I opened the document, I had to wait for a few moments (at first) to a few minutes (later on when the book grew) to be able to edit it. I attributed it to the large number of (large/hi-res) photos that were in the book. But that was not a big deal for me. But this morning, when I wanted to to add some photos to the document, I could not do a thing. I wanted to add a few pages, so in the Pages pane, I right-clicked and selected Add pages. But when specifing the number of pages to be added and selecting OK, nothing happened.

I was able to scroll through the document, but selecting an object on a page was not possible (I clicked but nothing was selected), I also could not go to a specific page via the Pages pane, nor could I export the document (which resulted in a freeze), or open the Resource Manager. When scrolling through the document, some photos were clearly visible, the photos on most of the other pages were shown as low-res.

What can be the problem here? Is it that my document is too big or contains too much photos? I was able to create a new document and work with it / edit it without any problems.

The document that I have trouble with has 184 pages (size is 30×30 cm) and some 210 (hi-res) photos and a number of text pages. All photos are linked, not embedded. The Publisher document has a file size of 24 MB.

What can I do to fix this? Split the file up into multiple files? The stories are text from an external file, but I have numerous texts added in Publisher. Is there a way to retrieve them?

Thanks for the help.

Hi @manneke-D and welcome to the forums,

The issues you are experiencing have been addressed in the latest Beta version.

The current advice is to sign up for the Beta program which you can do here: https://affinity.serif.com/affinity-beta-program/ then download the v2.5.2 (2486) Beta which you can run alongside the v2.5.0 Retail version...

Give that a go and let us know whether it resolves the problems you have with your photo book...

Hi Hangman,

Thanks for the quick answer.

I have downloaded and installed the beta version and I can work with the document again (adding pages, selecting objects, exporting). But I also had to wait a few moments  (but not so long as in the past) after opening before I could do, in this case add some pages. Is that due to the fact that it has so many hi-res photos? Are there any limitation on pages/linked documents?

Hi @manneke-D,

I'm glad to hear you can work on your photo book again in the latest Beta...

I'm not entirely sure about the initial wait when launching your file, Publisher may just have needed to 'figure everything out' after the issues experienced in v2.5.0... It may be worth saving the file with a v2 suffix (or similar) as you move forward, which may (or may not) reduce the file size of your Publisher document.

Technically no, the only limitation on pages/linked documents will be the available memory and hard drive space on your PC... How much RAM have you allocated to the app under Publisher's 'Performance' settings?

What resolution (dpi) and approximate dimensions are your image files?

I am glad too 🙂

Saw myself redo the whole book ...

In V2 there is 32 GB allocated, in V2 beta 49 GB. Did not change the setting. I tried V2 with a 50 GB limit, but that did not make any difference.

Photos are full res from an 18 MP Canon 7D. Dimensions are from full page (30×30 cm) or spread to 10×15 cm.
