Page number block is empty

I have page number masters created and applied OK and the boxes are on the pages but there is no content (numbers) in the boxes.

If you can upload an Affinity file displaying the behavior, it will help in identifying the issue. The file only needs to contain the master page and one page with the page number text frame.

Without the "Layers" panel your screenshot is not sufficiently informative. The missing overflow icon (red) may indicate an empty text frame or a frame with text in the same colour as the background. Activate in the menu "Text": the options "Show Special Characters" + "Highlight Fields" and show two screenshots with the Layers panel included, one of the master page + one of the documents page with its unfolded master layer.

First check if the frame is empty - turn on Text > Show Special Characters and see if the End of Story character is at the start of the frame. If there's a space or anything else in the frame then delete the contents. Then re-apply the master page to the document page.

Is the page number field maybe positioned outside of the Master page's dimensions like in this Page number off the page.afpub example?
