Document is used in 2 ways in Affinity -- I think.  One is the document size you choose  when you do file/new and choose a document size.  The second is the document menu at the top of the screeen.  I know how to use that.   In the screen shot you will see a document -- a photo of a building. But you will also see it is  on a large document.  The transparent area.  This is making printing a big problem. You can see the the print screen shot that the building is geting very small.

If there anywaimage.png.fa7ded3bd3b85d574201d005f8c8fdc7.pngyat this point that I can change the underlying "document." The big empty space on my screen? -- to something close to legal -- or is there another way to deal with this.

It depends on the result you are aiming for. For a quick scale-to-fit-the-page-print I normally select everything, Copy and then use New from Clipboard and then print that using the Scale to fit option in my print dialog. For real scale I use Actual size (I think - I'm not at my workstation atm) in the print dialog. The thing that can defeat this method is when you have a rotated object and the bounding box is also rotated so corners extend the selection beyond the visible content edges. In that case you need to fix the bounding box issue by using full stop and then Ctrl+full stop IIRC. This is all from memory so apologies if it is not complete are completely accurate.
