Hi,

I have made a catalog that I now have to translate into a couple of other languages.
There are many tables like that with many, many occurences of "X+AC" that need to be changed to for instance "X+AK".

I have selected all cells containing the phrase and thought I could change them all simply by using find&replace, but everything is greyed out and I see no way to do that.

Changing all those occurences manually over different languages would be a real pain though.
Any ideas how to do this please?

Did you check the Find options (cog icon) for "Normal" (not "Regular Expressions")? Apparently it can work with tables:

Good suggestion, thomaso. With Regular Expression enabled (which I think is the default) the Find expression would need to be X\+AC instead.

To me in V1 it appears to preserve my last used choice, both for a new document and after app relaunch.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it was set to "Normal" already.
I just went through all other options including RegEx, but I can seem to get any match whatever I try.
What am I doing wrong here?

Edit: Not even if I only select ONE instance of "X+AC" in ONE cell do I get any matches?
I am still on version 2.3.1 if that should make a difference?

In V1 having entered stuff into the Find and Replace boxes you still have to click Find before the Replace buttons ungrey
<ctrl>F works
F3 & <ctrl>H do not

Also, there is no need to highlight anything as it's ignored so if you hit Replace All then everything gets replaced whether highlighted or not. Not usually a problem but worth knowing about...unless V2 has better manners and respects the highlight

Note the OP's screenshot shows a "Scope" menu with the current setting "Selection". This indicates V2.

@LostInTranslation, what if you choose another Scope menu entry? Or test the same search with a text frame, not a table?

@LostInTranslation To exclude the most trivial thing — be sure to click the "Find" button and then "Replace all".

Antoher problem could be that, that the scope that is used by "Find and Replace" is lost, and that's why you don't get any matches.
I found that this can happen from time to time, especially if you use the [selection] as the scope type, don't ask why.

Deselect the table and make the selection again, and try the Search And Replace.

If that wouldn't help i have no idea why this doesn't work for you, as i have no problems (APub 2.4.2) with search and replace text in table basing on similar example as yours.

Forgive me guys, this was a classic case of user error on my side and it works now.
My mistake was, that I thought "Find", "Replace" and "Replace All" were tabs, not buttons. So you could either just find or replace as well depending on the "tab" you chose.
And I assumed that matches would show up "live" as I entered them. For some reason it never occured to me to click "Find".

Turns out just clicking on "Find" actually finds stuff (duh!) and then I can replace it.
Thank you so much for your help!

Yeah well, this Find/Replace thing is like nothing I've seen before but it's all part of the Affinity experience. Glad it's solved

The Affinity UI leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. I can see how one could mistake the buttons for tabs.

Imagine how slow that would be in a document with hundreds of pages of text -- for instance with a live search entering something like "the" when you want to begin finding instances of "theory" or "theater" or "anthem" any of hundreds of other words with that 3 letter combination would mean the app had to find & list every instance of all of them!
