Changing the colour of an object in Publisher

Recommended Posts

I feel ridiculous asking this, but... how do you change the colour of an object in Publisher?

Here is my layout with nothing selected. I'd like to change the colour of the large blue rectangle.

Here I am with the object selected. I'd argue that the expected behaviour when you (a) pick an object and (b) change the fill colour is that the fill colour will change, but it does not.

Regardless of how I try to change it...

... the fill colour will not change.

I'm fairly new to Affinity and I'm discovering its idiosyncrasies, but I'm baffled that I can't figure out why "select object, change fill colour" doesn't change the fill colour of the selected object?

I'm sure it will change, if you try to change it in the right place in the User Interface.

It looks like that is probably a Text Frame (it would help to have the Layers panel visible, but the control nodes are those of a Text Frame). And for a Text Frame the background color is controlled by the Text Frame panel. Window > Text > Text Frame.

You have selected a text box so the fill for that is on the Text Frame Panel

In addition to the advice above, when you have a Frame Text layer selected, the Colour Panel, Swatches Panel and the Stroke Panel affect the text inside the layer, not the layer itself which, as has been said, is controlled by the Text Frame Panel.

If you had any text in the layer you would have seen the colour change.

It’s very easy to be confused by this at first but you get used to it after a little while.

Note: You can tell that you have a Frame Text layer selected if the blue selection/bounding box has an extra little handle at the bottom right just off the corner of the usual bottom-right handle.
