newbie2
Good evening, I import all of my photos into Apple photos. As I cannot drag into AF from Photos, I copy into a file on my desk top and then drag in from there. However, shooting in RAW today and when I copy to desk top, they lose the CR2 file extension and become jpg!!! When they are dragged into AF they open as a jpeg, but can click on the develop personna and they are treated as RAW!! I suspect this is a problem with Photos app (perhaps something I have changed, as have been able to do this before), but would just like to check with experts here first. It would be so much simpler if could drag straight into AF. Many thanks
jkehoe
Hi, I remember others discussing Apple's Photos app here in this Forum, but I don't have a shortcut or link. From what I recall, Apple's Photos makes it difficult (impossible?) to open an untouched RAW file once it has filed it. I don't know why dragging and dropping a Canon CR2 file onto Affinity opens as a jpeg, but maybe that's what other Photos users found, too. In other words, if Photos imported it onto the Mac, the CR2 file extension may not be pristine any longer (?). I hadn't used Photos (or iPhoto) in a very long time and I download all my Canon CR2 files in a way that preserves them in their native Canon format. For now, I'm using Aperture which uses a Masters folder hidden inside its library. I can browse that folder, right click on a CR2 file, choose Open with... and select Affinity Photo or Designer. These CR2 files will open inside the Develop Persona in either Affinity program—exactly what I want: to develop the RAW CR2 file into, say, jpeg. Perhaps other Affinity forum users can give you a better solution, but when I read this "feature" about Apple's Photos, I chose not to launch it. R C-R
To extract a RAW photo file from Apple Photos to use in another app like Affinity Photo, you have to select the file in Apple Photos, choose "Export unmodified original," & save that to some convenient location. You can then open the exported original in Affinity Photo. Apple Photos does not support dragging a RAW file from its library into another app, a folder, or the Desktop. That will always result in an exported JPEG, GIF, or whatever other 'developed' image file format the app stores for that file.
