JackattackIndustries
After creating a new square brush I can't change the Shape or Hardness. Is there a solution?
walt.farrell
It's normal for the Hardness to be fixed at 80 for any brushes except the basic round brushes, as far as I know. (You could change it in V1, but it had no actual affect on brush strokes. They fixed that by making it unchangeable in V2.) I tested it on V1 now and I could change the shape in V1 but once I imported into V2 that option is locked away. Why would they remove that feature? How do I get around this? walt.farrell
I don't know about shape, only hardness. Sorry. On Windows, the ‘Hardness’ and ‘Shape’ controls are both displayed as enabled in version 1 and both greyed out in version 2, so the shape can only be changed in version 1 (and the hardness should be greyed out in both versions, since it can’t actually be changed). On iPadOS, the ‘Hardness’ and ‘Shape’ controls are displayed as enabled in both version 1 and version 2, so the shape can be changed in both versions (but, as above, the hardness can’t actually be changed). Dan C
Hi @JackattackIndustries, Welcome to the Affinity Forums & thanks for your report! I can confirm this is expected behaviour in Affinity V2, as the Hardness and Shape options are not supported for the Square brushes. In Affinity V1, the 'Shape' slider changed the brush from a Square shape to a Rectangle, which means the brush is no longer a 'Square Brush' - hence this option was disabled for V2 as a 'Square Brush' should always be square. It does appear however that this has been overlooked on iPad - as the Shape slider should not be usable for a Square Brush & Hardness should not be usable for 'non-basic' brushes, as found on Desktop. I'm getting this logged with our iPad team now. I hope this clears things up Alfred

It seems analogous to restricting the shape of a Round Brush so that we can’t make it into a thin ellipse. Dan C
This was a decision made by the development team for V2 - unfortunately that's all the information I have to provide at this time. If you'd like to see this behaviour change, or return to the V1 behaviour, I'd recommend creating a Feedback post in the relevant section of the Forums

Be careful what you say! – They might solve the anomaly by restricting the shape of the Round Brush as well! 😉 Alfred 1 Quote Acer XC-895 : Core i5-10400 Hexa-core 2.90 GHz : 32GB RAM : Intel UHD Graphics 630 : Windows 10 Home Affinity Publisher 2 : Affinity Photo 2 : Affinity Designer 2 : (latest release versions) on desktop and iPad

In that case, … names like "Oil", "Gouache" etc. maybe misleading, too. 🙄 (apart from their similar look:) Quote macOS 10.14.6 | MacBookPro Retina 15" | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1
