DGee Posted April 2, 2024 Posted April 2, 2024 I'm trying to leave the Adobe ship but it's a very difficult task. I can get over the many features missing in Affinity but the fact that PSD mockups open broken or look different in Affinity is a deal breaker. Hopefully I'm missing something and that´s the reason for this post... BTW I have the import PSD smart objects option checked in preferences. The main issues I'm encountering are: 1. In many cases layer masks won't import and I have to manually mask those in Affinity Photo 2. Gradient Fills won't translate even if those are not mesh gradients 3. Sometimes layer styles won't translate accurately. Even if I uncheck the import psd smart objects there are clear visible differences. This a serious problem. Every mockup out there is made for Photoshop so if Affinity apps cannot properly open and render PSDs , they are not usable as a replacement for Photoshop in any professional workflow. This is a problem that has not been solved since Affinity Suite came out and to this day it has not been fixed, while there are free apps like Photopea.com that are able to open any PSD file and render it without issues... it's frustrating... Staff NathanC Posted April 9, 2024 Staff Posted April 9, 2024 Hi @DGee, The Unknown property errors are normally the result of a lack of feature parity between the apps on FX layers resulting in mapping issues which can also include gradient fills, improved support has been requested before such as the thread below and is hopefully something we'll see in later versions. As for the masking issue, could we take a look at the .PSD file? Quote

firstdefence Posted April 14, 2024 Posted April 14, 2024 Re the hoodie mockup, I can't see anything wrong with it at all in Affinity Designer, it works just as if it's in Photoshop, Layer structure is the same too. In Affinity Photo you have to nest the colours to get the same effect. Forgot to do the hoodie design too, nest that. It should not need any work otherwise there is a problem. As I said before, Photopea, which is a free online editing tool is able to read the psd and render it as it should. BBG3 1 Quote

Staff NathanC Posted April 15, 2024 Staff Posted April 15, 2024 Thanks @DGee, Looks like there is a bug with the .PSD clipping mask import with smart objects, we do have this logged with the developers so i'll bump it with your report. DGee and BBG3 2 Quote

BBG3 Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 I have a lot of PSD mockups, and if I open them in Affinity Designer or Photos, I don't know how to fix them. Sometimes, I think they are unfixable. I did fix a few of them, but I had to open the file in Photoshop and check all the layers one by one. It was so time-consuming for me. Also, some of the PRO mockups are TIFF, and Affinity Photo opens them flat. In Photo, at least, there's a Setting under General to "Open PSD Smart Objects as Smart Objects where possible" which will help in some cases. Are you using that? The TIFF standard allows for layered files, but they’re proprietary. Only Affinity apps have access to Serif’s TIFF layers, and only Adobe apps have access to Adobe’s TIFF layers. I just opened an old, layered TIFF file saved from Photoshop CS2. It did open in Photo v2 with all layers intact, so whatever the mechanism, Affinity Photo does read PS layers in TIFF files (if supported in Affinity). It makes sense that PS would save those layers in PSD format. They use tiff because it compresses the layers better than PSD. 😜 Quote Affinity Designer | Affinity Photo | Affinity Publisher V2.6.2 ▪️ Mac: 2021 M1 MacBook Pro 16", 32GB memory, macOS Sequoia 15.4 ▪️ iPad: iPad Pro, 12.9": iPadOS 16.7.10, Apple Pencil 1

Technically, that TIFF-format mockup is not a PSD, and so there's no guarantee how Affinity would process them. And even then, there are Photoshop PSD functions that are not supported by Affinity, and if your mockup uses those then it might open flat.
