Sorry for the complete novice post - I'm utterly confused and have watched the tutorial videos but can't seem to find one that does what I want to do (I'm not even sure if what I want to do is a 'thing'!)

I am a hand-lettering lettering artist, and I want to be able to digitise my work so that they can be used for website logos etc. I have been told I need to scan them in, and then use a software like Affinity to turn it into a vector, which will then allow me to enlarge it without it becoming pixelated. How do I do that?! And how do I select the black writing to make it black (I guess from the scan at the moment it's a little grey - I need to change the levels to make the black, blacker)? And then move the logo around?!

All help gratefully received by this confused beginner!

Seems the advise you received is a bit vague. If you´re expecting Affinity Designer will draw it for you ("autotracing" is what you´re looking for maybe) this isn´t possible yet. If you want to trace it manually then all the tools are there. For the scan: Preview.app can help to improve your raster image for sure - but´s not necessary for manual tracing.

Cheers

P.

Hi BeckyHolt,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

To convert your work to vectors you you will need to trace it as PixelPest mentioned. You can do this automatically using a third party software (currently Affinity Designer doesn't do it automatically) or manually using the Pen Tool which usually leads to better results, in particular if you are working with lettering & calligraphy. After tracing your work it becomes a group of vector objects that you can manipulate/edit as you see fit (scale, skew, move around, change fill and stroke colours etc) without loosing quality.

For automatic tracing, one of the best programs around is Vector Magic ( which is a little expensive but very good), but there's also other options like Super Vectorizer and a few more. If you do a search for tracing or vectorize you will find several threads discussing this with more app suggestions.

If you want to trace your work manually, you need to learn how to work with the Pen and Node Tools. Affinity Review (our ezine) issue#1 (iBooks version) covers the Pen Tool extensively in a few video tutorials. Check the section: Feature Focus: Pen Tool on page 39. You can can also check the in-house video tutorials for Affinity Designer here.

If you have any questions or issues just post away here in the forums. There's always people willing to help.
