How can I use a specific transform origin for scaling

Transform Origin is only for rotation.

OH, nice, now I understand, but it is missing from Affinity Photo. Or is it there too?

As it's more of a vector oriented transformation tool it's an exclusive feature to Designer 2 so it's not available in Photo 2 (It's also in Publisher's Designer Persona) 🙂

Point Transform Tool is in Designer Persona of Publisher on macOS. You might need to manually add it to the tools bar, though.

I guess that will be ctrl key on Windows.

Hi @NathanC, It would be good to mention this in the Help, and also fix it in the Status bar - even if Transform Origin is enabled, and resizing with the Ctrl key will be done around it, so it says "around the centre", not "around the Transform Origin".

Edit Help: it can be found there with a little searching (although it would be better to use an unambiguous label with capital letters - Transform Origin),

but some comprehensive and more detailed description of the Transform Origin switch would certainly be useful.
The current description is not very accurate.
