Round caps on stroke changes to Square after export to PDF

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm really going crazy over this. Maybe i'm just dumb, but I'm sure that you can get rounded strokes (rounded caps) after exporting to plain PDF?

The first picture is how it looks in the program, the second one is exported as pdf. Why does it change the end cap to square? Or is this just how pdf

works? (It can't export rounded strokes and lines?) Is this an easy fix or is my program just beeing weird?

Greatful for help! Cuz I'm going nuts haha

Hi @Stephanie. and welcome to the forums,

I've just checked with all PDF Presets and I'm not seeing the issue... Could you perhaps upload a sample file so we can take a closer look...

@Stephanie. Welcome to the foums. Are those arcs made with the Donut or Pie Tool? I can get a result like yours if I use the Donut tool and align the stroke to the outside . Align the stroke to the centre and all should be fine.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.2
Affinity Designer 2.3.1 | Affinity Photo 2.3.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.3.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Hmm, wierd that I can't get the same results! Here is the file, this happens in every file I have tho, so I don't know if it's a settings issue or something else :/

Hi! No, I simply just made a ellips with the ellips tool, put a color to stroke, made it thicker, cut away pieces, and chose rounded cap :/ Nothing more

(Oh and I have it aligned to centre! 😮 )

Very odd, your file exports without issue here...

Could you confirm if you're on Mac or Windows and which PDF Export Settings you're using?

Hi @Stephanie.,

So the export preview is showing the curve correctly 'with' round caps...

Which PDF viewer are you using to view the exported PDF?

Interesting...

I've opened your PDF in Acrobat Reader, Foxit PDF Reader, Packzview, Apple Preview, PDF Toolbox, Safari, Firefox and Google Chrome... All show the file correctly with rounded caps except Google Chrome which shows it with square caps...

Is it possible you're viewing the file with the Adobe Acrobat Reader in the Google Chrome Broswer?

Okey, I think I now know the "Problem"..I think cuz it shows me in microsoft it turns square? Cuz when I open with google chrome it's with round edges! (yay!) So I guess it never really "got" square edges? It just looked like it in microsoft?

My previous uploaded PDF file in Edge,

and in Chrome - but with Acrobat extension.
image.png.aafc381f50c926282a667b772c1685a5.png

And this is Chrome without extension (Acrobat extension disabled).

image.png.74067e4fa1b299d74a8f5343eacfe540.png

Edit: interestingly, not only does the Acrobat extension display the PDF incorrectly (square corners), but the image is even significantly larger.
I have already uninstalled this extension 🙂

I very much suspect the issue is the browser, i.e., Edge rather than the file itself... Edge is not the best application for viewing PDF files reliably... If you don't already have it installed I would recommend downloading and installing the free Acrobat Reader for Windows as that will give you a much more reliable representation of your PDF file...

If you look at my previous edited post, the Acrobat extension is causing it for me - the browser itself displays the PDF correctly. Aren't you using something similar in Edge?
