Is it possible to create a new path, or a compound path shape or object from the offset resulting from the contour tool. Expanding seems to do something similar, however I am looking to keep both the original path boundary as well as the path resulting from the offset. Thank you any suggestions on doing this if it is in fact a feature.

Does duplicating the shape before expand stroke work?

You can then combine both curves by merge curves or create compound, but it depends on many details. And example would help to understand your request.

Hi @BenjaminM, I totally agree with you. I often need both shapes for my projects, and having to duplicate them every time is an extra step that I wish I didn’t have to take. I hope the developers will add a feature to create a new path from contour offset in the future. In the meantime, I use the workaround suggested by @NotMyFault. It works well for me, but it would be nice to have a simpler option.
