Low quality UI icons using Macbook pro 16"M1 - External monitor screen

Recommended Posts

  • What Application are you using?

Designer

  • Are you using the latest release version?

2.3.1

  • Issue

Many icons are blurred, really bad looking on my 2k monitor (2560x1440). On MacBook Pro 16" M1 screen it looks great with no issue, this is on external (main) screen (BenQ PD2500Q)

Have you setup the external monitor accordingly for your macOS version?

There are some known issues when it comes to Affinity software in conjunction with using external monitors. Though I don't know (can't tell) if UI icon sharpness is also affected from that, since when running external monitors in a lower than the default/native device res under macOS, it has always a tendency to more blurry screens.

But if it is only for the Affinity apps here, it might be related to what I initially said about some known issues with external monitors. Which macOS version do you have in use?

Other than that you can also look through similar general net reports, in order to see what other people recommend to do  ...

Ok thanks for sending me those issues, this is already then reported and it is not new issue how can I see, so I don't understand how this could be seen by Affinity developers. They want we post issues on forum, but why then they don't fix this. This is a serious thing for me.

I can only say that this is only issue with Affinity software and not related to monitor settings. And yes labels are also blurry. This is serious UI bug.

I am using latest Mac OS version Sonoma 14.2.1

I don't think this is a problem with external monitors.
I'm on Windows, I don't use an external or additional monitor, and I also see that some icons are sharp (pixel perfect) and others are blurry.
I think this should also be taken into account:

  • poorly designed icons (not pixel perfect)
  • problem with the position of icon in the app (X,Y coordinates not on whole pixels)
  • problem with anti-aliasing of icons in the app

I'm on Windows

Windows is not MacOS and there are quite some differences between these OS in terms of external monitor handling, system resolutions, possible OS version bugs etc.!

If I find the spare time tomorrow, I will take a look in the company how things look there then for some M1/M2 MacBooks running under macOS Sonoma 14.2.1, which are connected to external 4K + 5K LG monitors.

Just because I use Windows doesn't mean I've never had to deal with MacOS and external monitors connected to a MacBook.
First, you need to rule out the simplest causes of the problem before moving on to problems with resolution, support for external monitors, or bugs in the OS.

Then you could have told from the beginning so, instead of just writing ...

... which leads to misunderstandings then as it is not quite the same here in this possible macOS bugs context (like apples & oranges).
