I doin't care about  cmyk and publishing , just need one more  extra channel .  Can do it  in Photoshop but cant here.    Your layer system and layer linkin is already way more convenient than Photoshop one.      It would be just another step.   I am pretty  sure it shouldn't be much of a problem.
