Using a Sony A7RIV, I took some studio pictures with continuous lighting.

Done this many times before, used my normal import method to my storage, on a NAS attached to my MAC.

This is the first time using the updated Affinity Photo 2 (2.3.1).

I have almost a strange vignetting at all corners, but only when viewing or editing the RAW file in Affinity Photo.

NOT in any other preview or photo editing software, including Sony's own Image Editing Desktop, it just is not there?!?

Does anyone have any ideas? See attachment.

Before anyone asks, it is not a wrong lens hood😂

If I save the files in the Sony Image Editor as a TIFF, then open in Affinity Photo 2, this strange effect is not there anymore. No crop has been applied.

Stumped.....

Hard to tell from that shown image alone, as you didn't showed how things look otherwise in contrast for TIFFs or the RAWs when previewed in other apps.

Ok now I see, you mean it should be all dark black instead.

What's the performance hardware acceleration set to for macOS APh 2.3.1 under the APh preferences (Metal or OpenGL)? And which RAW engine (the Serif or Apple one do you used, as those are switchable under macOS APh versions), also which macOS version do you have in use?

I have not changed it since installing, it is Metal. I am using MacOS Ventura 13.6.4

Retry with setting to OpenGL instead, you will have afterwards to restart the app in order for the acceleration change to be activated/used.

Take a look at the pixel dimensions of your RAW image in the other RAW processors, and in Affinity Photo.

You will probably find that Photo has (intentionally) included additional pixels at the edges that the others have not. That may explain at least part of your problem. For another part, is Lens Correction being applied (influenced by your Develop Assistant Settings, and the Lens panel in the Develop Persona) and is tthe correct Lens being identified and is it a supported Lens?

Thank you Walt! I changed the RAW processor to Apple (Core Image Raw), in the Develop Assistant, and I got normal black corners.

Lens correction was not being applied. Also it was the same with no lens profile being used, and selecting the correct lens profile.

Then I tried disabling the Develop Assistant, opened the file again, it it still was good, with normal black corners.

I will explore which setting will be best to use!

Thank you Walt, and v_kyr for your time and help.

Much appreciated.

  • Menu Affinity Photo 2 > Develop Persona

Then:

  • Menu Affinity Photo 2 > Settings > Assistant > click on the button Developer Assistant
  • (or, directly, menu Window > Developer Assistant Settings):

JDBOX, I have just developed the same problem with .afphoto files, can you give me a bullet list of how you rectified it. Thanks

Assuming you are a Mac user, the hint @Oufti just posted should tell you what you need to do.

I checked that out, but my settings are as shown on Oufti's attachment. Now this morning Affinity is not showing turned down corner images, however, the program has been behaving badly ever since I updated to V2.6.2. Things like using Levels and then clicking merge produces the spinning pizza continually and I have to force quit to break the cycle, has anyone else experience issues with this update?

Does it mean that Serif Labs is checked? If yes, try to change it to Apple (Core Image Raw).

At the moment the corner fold-downs are absent, I will try the 'change it to Apple (Core Image Raw' if it happens again. However, I have additional problems (going off piste here) with Affinity Photo since the last update, namely I have a file that pizza ball spins continually when i try to 'Merge' a layer Adjustment. I have tried to save the file with a new name, but to no avail.

Lee D - it seems to have sorted itself, no turned down corners any more. I actually did nothing other than close down my computer at the end of the day and start it up the following day.

If in doubt, "Turn it off and turn it back on again!" 😁
