80sTherapy Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 When opening Apple's macOS icons .psd template on Designer v2, the icon templates are all taller than they are wide. For example. the 512px x2 version is 1024x1034px. That seems to be caused by the shadow layer that is placed slightly lower than the rest. I'm wondering whether that's normal, and if the whole should actually be square e.g. 1024x1024px in this case, and the shadow layer tweaked so that it's still visible at the bottom but its container actually square, and if a slight error happens in that regard when importing the .psd file into Designer. Could someone please check for me? The .psd template doc can be downloaded here: https://devimages-cdn.apple.com/design/resources/download/macOS-12-Production-Templates-Photoshop.dmg Thank you. Quote
MikeTO Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 I don't think you selected that properly and I can see grey pixels below the checkerboard inside the selection rectangle of your screenshot. I tried it in both Photo and Photoshop and got 1024x1024 in both. The shadow layer is offset 10 pixels to the bottom for the 1024x1024px template as shown in my original screenshot. In the 512x512 template, it's offset by 5 pixels, 3 pixels at 256x256, etc. Do you also get 1024x1024 when opening the file in Designer? In Photo, I'm only getting the 892x892px object. I must be missing something there. Quote

Any chance you could check if you're getting the same in Designer? I just disabled "Import PSD smart objects where possible" in settings. I'm no longer getting 1024x1034, but it's also no longer importing the icon grid elements. I'm left with only the squircle and shadow layers in a 892x892px template. Quote
firstdefence Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 I don't know if they have done something to the file but from the link you have posted I now get blur to the shadow with editing. but there are no embedded files and I cannot select the outer bounds. Staff MEB Posted January 10, 2024 Staff Posted January 10, 2024 @firstdefence, Enable Import PSD smart objects where possible in Affinity Preferences, General section. I can't open Photoshop at the moment (scratch disk issue/low space). Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
Old Bruce Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 Try a double click on the highlighted layer Icon, not the layer the Icon on the left. Staff MEB Posted January 10, 2024 Staff Posted January 10, 2024 @Old Bruce, Same issue as firstdefense. The layer you have highlighted is a regular pixel layer, not an embedded document, so it doesn't open anything. Old Bruce 1 Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
Old Bruce Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 Ah, yes. My test was done with me having the "Smart objects" option checked on my system and the screenshot was made from the one from firstdefence. 80sTherapy Posted January 10, 2024 Author Posted January 10, 2024 Yes, with Import PSD smart objects where possible disabled, you are only opening a 892x892 regular pixel layer. With Import PSD smart objects where possible enabled, all the other embedded docs in the file are taller than they are wide. The reason is because the shadow layer is offset down by a few pixels (10 in the 1024x1024 doc, 5 in the 512x512, etc). I just find it weird that the embedded docs aren't perfect square, and am wondering if the .psd file is imported properly into Designer... Quote
