I'm using windows version and I set up my master pages with page numbers and two column text boxes, per page, that are linked. I'm trying to add text to page 2 but it doesn't show a new layer and I can't click on individual text boxes to change its size due to adding an image at the top. Do I have a setting wrong? The text box doesn't show that I selected it with the move cursor. The box has some x's on each side. I can't edit text or select it. Please help!!

To change its size you need to right-click on the Master Page layer in the Layers panel and choose Edit Detached, if you just want to change it on that page. Then you'll be able to Select it.

Ok, so do all new layers added to their individual pages go directly under the Master Page? Will this happen every time I add text? I have 75 pages of text to add to this book and images, I just need to know how to edit the text around the new images added.

No. Layers you manually add directly to a page are on that page. But layers inherited from a Master Page are in the Master Page layer, and only certain actions can be done to them without using Edit Detached. You can change the content of a Text Frame inherited from a Master Page, but you cannot change its size or location as those attributes are inherited.

I'm not quite sure how you're laying things out without seeing some screenshots, and there are a number of ways you could do it, so I can't provide much more information beyond that right now.
