Hello,

after the new 2.3 Affinity Photo update I can’t select something with a square or freehand and press the delete key on the MacBook keyboard. It deletes everything. (The whole layer) The only workaround is click the refine button and choose a new layer for the cut out.

this is very annoying as is it one of the basic features for a photo software.

Hi @Monoteur and welcome to the forums,

Is the layer in the layers panel where you’re making your selection an image or a pixel layer?

Assuming the former right click the layer in the layers panel and select Rasterise and then try to select something with a square or freehand tool and then press the delete key to see if that works…

I’m selecting a layer in the layer panel go to the selection tool, select something in the picture ( pixel) and press delete . This delete the layer in the layer panel not the selection in the picture.

i tried also to rasterise and do select and delete but doesn’t work as well.

Hi @Monoteur,

See if this helps... if not could you perhaps make a quick screen recording that shows the complete UI including the layers panel as there is no obvious reason why this shouldn't work...

Hi @Monoteur,

Thanks for the screen recording...

This is because the second layer you've added is an 'Image' layer and not a 'Pixel' layer. After adding the second layer, right-click it in the Layers Panel, select Rasterise and then repeat your selection and hit the backspace key at which point you should find that it doesn't delete the entire layer but only your selection... :)

Hi,

ah ok thanks. I don't understand the difference between Image layer and Picture (Rasterized) Layer, but well it works now.

I'm sure it wasn't like that before 🤔

Hi @Monoteur,

  • Pixel layer - containing raster images where pixel-based editing takes place.
  • Image layer - self-contained placed images that retain the original image data including the colour profile.

It's always been this way but I'm glad all is now working for you... :)
